Mortal Kombat 2: Is it happening? When will it release?

Mortal Kombat fans, it’s your turn to rejoice—Mortal Kombat 2 is officially in the works! That’s not all, Warner Bros is reportedly developing Mortal Kombat spinoffs as well, which means that you may get a TV show or two while you wait for your favorite characters to grace the silver screens.

Getting back to Mortal Kombat 2, details are very few and far in between right now. The studio has only just confirmed its screenwriter, so the story is slowly kicking into production.

Mortal Kombat 2 may release sometime in late 2023 or 2024. Cast from the first movie is set to return, with a special focus on Joe Taslim, whose character will evolve from Sub-Zero to the villain, Noob Saibot.

Here are some other details we know about the sequel:

When will Mortal Kombat 2 be released?

There is no confirmed release date for Mortal Kombat 2.

Although Mortal Kombat 2 was greenlit this Jan, it faced a few uncertainties in regards to its director—that is, the noncommittal responses from Simon McQuoid. As of now, Jeremy Slater has signed on for the screenplay.

I wouldn’t expect the film to come out in early 2023 but it is safe to assume it could be out later next year or maybe early 2024.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Warner Bros is looking to develop other Mortal Kombat properties as well. So, depending on their connection to the films or what priority they have, Mortal Kombat 2’s release date may get affected.

Mortal Kombat 2 Cast, Characters, and Plot

From the first movie, expect to see Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Mehcad Brooks, Tadanobu Asano, Ludi Lin, and Hiroyuki Sanada return.

You will also see Joe Taslim return, but with a new avatar. In Mortal Kombat, he played Sub-Zero, who (as video game players know) turns into the villainous Noob Saibot. Saibot is said to be the sequel’s main antagonist.

Other than this, no major cast, character, or plot details have been confirmed.

Fans were super disappointed that the first movie did not have any Johnny Cage in it. There were rumors that there could be a standalone Cage movie, but the latest word on the street (as per Slater himself) is that Cage may appear in the sequel.

Since Cage is such a fan-favorite character, having his own movie, rather than being part of the sequel, makes more sense. Still, it is possible he could be introduced through Mortal Kombat 2.
