Morbius Director Stays Neutral on Connections to Amazing Spider-Man

Director Daniel Espinosa is doing his best not to reveal which version of Spider-Man is connected to the Morbius storyline.

In an interview with IGN, Espinosa jokingly said that he couldn’t reveal anything about the Spider-Man and Morbius connection, or “people at Sony would have him shot”.

“There are people at Sony that will have me shot [for saying anything] because then I will force them to commit to something. I have my thoughts and opinions, and they are in the movie, and that’s what I’m pushing for.”

Interestingly, his added comment seems to suggest that he is still pushing on his idea of a shared universe.

Previously, in a Twitter Q&A with CinemaBlend, the director did spill the beans that the upcoming Morbius will take place in the same universe as Venom. As the latter appeared in the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home, there are high chances of one of the Spider-Men being included in it.

Audiences have already bet on who they want to see—Andrew Garfield. The actor had his chance of completing the trilogy snatched, and with No Way Home’s incredible success, his revival seems most vital for them.

The bets aren’t without any reasoning, though. Scenes from Morbius’ trailer suggest that it takes place in the same universe as Garfield’s Spider-Man, too.

In one scene, a front-page report on The Daily Bugle mentions the supervillain Rhino on the loose. Another scene showcases the Oscorp Tower with the same design as seen in The Amazing Spider-Man.

Espinosa even discussed the multi-versions of “almost all characters” in the Marvel Universe, especially since opening up the multiverse channel. While not set in stone yet, there is a high possibility of a Spider-Man in Morbius’ universe.

“If you look at most of how they created the different timelines in Marvel in the comic books, in all universes, you have versions of almost all characters in those universes, but they have slightly different approaches to who they are, if they’re good guys or bad guys.”

Daniel Espinosa

Audiences will have to wait for Sony to decide something bigger and see whether the Morbius/Venom storyline will give Garfield’s Spider-Man a chance to tie up loose ends.

Meanwhile, Morbius opened to fairly average reviews in theaters on April 1, 2022.
