Episode 15 of Gundam’s original 1979 anime series never got a North American premiere and is still not officially available in the region. It was due to a special request from the director and creator of the series Yoshiyuki Tomino as the episode was not on par with the others.

But now the franchise has something even better in store for the US audience regarding the episode they never got.

Sunrise revealed Gundam’s new film Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island, based on episode 15 of the same name from the anime’s original 1979 series. The film is scheduled to release in Japanese theatres in 2022.

An official date for the film’s North American premiere will be revealed later by the company. It is likely to hit US theatres a few months after its Japanese release.

The film will retell Cucuruz Doan’s Island episode from a new perspective with some additional details and information about the events that conspired.

The original episode starts when the protagonist Amuro Ray is investigating a distress signal. While saving the pilots who sent out the signal, some children and a Zack II piloted by Cucuruz Doan attack Amuro.

Doan is a former Zeon pilot who ran away from a mission where he was asked to finish off the children of the civilians he killed during the battle. Instead of doing that, he takes those kids and flees away from the Zeon forces.

Now he uses his Zaku II to protect himself and the children from the war and its evils.

The upcoming film will have many details from Amuro’s stay at the island and might reveal things we never knew. We might even get some additional info on Doan’s background as well.

Besides the theatrical release, the film will most likely be available on streaming platforms later in the year. Funimation, Crunchyroll, and Netflix have the most Gundam titles at the moment, and this film might just become a part of their collection.

I am honestly so excited for this upcoming film. I am sure that the announcement of this installment must have awakened a wave of excitement in many veteran fans.

I have no idea what this film has in store for us, but loads of cool robot fights and action sequences are guaranteed. After all, it’s Gundam, the greatest mecha anime of all time.
