Boom Goes Te Kā! Twitter Erupts in Confusion Over Moana Live-Action

Only seven years have passed since Moana introduced us to the Polynesian myths of the demigod Maui and the Gods Te Fiti and Te Kā. But Dwayne Johnson, who voiced Maui, announced on Disney’s Twitter that the live-action remake of the animated film is already in the works. And yet the news was met with confusion and frustration rather than celebration.

The actor’s announcement on Twitter was met with several fans wondering if this was the right time for a reimagined Moana live-action. Since live-actions of famous Disney animations wait at least a decade or two since the original’s premiere, their concerns come from a sensible place. Read some of their replies to the news:

Disney has remade several of their best-animated classics like Cinderella, Beauty and The Beast, Aladdin, Lion King, and more. So why is Moana facing so much backlash over its live-action remake?

It’s simply not the right time! Decades have passed between the aforementioned live-action remakes and their originals. Even spinoff Disney characters like Cruella and Maleficent got their live-action made after more than 40 and 50-year gaps since their debut in 101 Dalmatians and The Sleeping Beauty.

But not even a decade has passed since Moana came out in theaters. Despite it almost making $700 million at the box office, a reimagined live action so soon sounds risky and disrespectful. Disney promised a Moana series to the fans, but its replacement with this live action just to boost sales might not playoff as well as they want it to.

Disney surely didn’t get the action it hoped for after Johnson’s announcement, but we’ll have to wait for more updates to form our opinion on the remake. What do you make of their decision to skip the series and go forward with a live-action film so soon? Let us know in the comments.
