Meta’s Planning to Make Facial Expressions Readable with New Patent

Owing to its affordable nature, the Meta Quest has established itself as one of the most sought-after VR technologies among enthusiasts. The parent company Meta monopolized the market by rolling out exclusives and undercutting rivals’ prices to reach the point where it easily dominates the inexpensive VR space.

But a sole focus on pricing is never enough to keep the success intact. Therefore, instead of letting its developers sit idle, Meta is investing heaps of cash into VR research to make sure its devices brim with innovation, with a recent patent revealing a bizarre yet exciting feature that the company aims to implement.

As per a recent patent filing by Meta, the company is planning to introduce a feature that would let people see a subject’s face even when they are wearing the VR headset.

However, the way it will give the view is highly complex, and several modi operandi are included in the patent documentation. One method of working incorporates using a camera inside the headset to showcase the 3D model of the subject’s eyes on a screen present outside the headset.

While this may not look natural, the innovation will let an external viewer read the subject’s facial expressions, as it serves a similar purpose to a diving mask.

An innovation like this can be immensely useful for providing data when playtesting games, and as the technology gets more refined, its benefits will become more extensive.

On top of this, Meta already has a vast library of exclusives to offer for a budget-friendly device that can function wholly standalone, which frankly makes it arduous for any new firm to break into the market and get the sweet taste of victory.

Hopefully, we’ll be able to see a mammoth firm come into the picture to give Meta a run for its money. A monopolized market can often lead to the stagnation of products. For real innovation to kick in, there has to be competition amongst powerhouses, and who knows, we might just get that in the future?
