The Marvels Play Tag in the New Teaser Trailer Released by Marvel

The Marvels is a sequel to the MCU’s 2019 film Captain Marvel, but this story is not only about Carol Danvers. Since she broke free from the “tyrannical Kree,” the superhero has been “shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe.” But her otherworldly duties are about to get much more complicated!

Marvel Studios dropped an ominous clip teasing the first trailer’s release this Tuesday. Keeping their promise, they delivered the first teaser trailer, so we finally have our first look at what will happen in the 2023 film. I’m tagging the synopsis and trailer for The Marvels below, so get a load of that first:

[Quote] Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe.

When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as “The Marvels.”

The video comes right under two minutes but offers a lot of information, and I’ll break it down for you, so keep reading.

S.A.B.E.R, which replaces SWORD in the MCU, is an intergalactic organization that takes care of Earth’s threats from other worlds. Nick Fury has hired the WandaVision superhero, Monica Rambeau, who searches out what’s wrong with the jump-point nearest to Earth.

But after a surge of power, S.A.B.E.R loses touch with Rambeau, and Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, replacing her, thinking Fury is testing her to enter the Avengers. Of course, the matter is much more complicated than that. Ms. Marvel’s post-credit scene, where we see Captain Marvel in her superfan’s room, comes up in the trailer too.

The trailer clearly highlights a new problem the three heroes are dealing with – each time they seem to use their powers, they change places with each other. A few comedic changes where Kamala meets Goose the Flerken and Carol & Monica’s reunion after their fight, which the latter alludes to in WandaVision, are teased in the trailer.

Another notable character we see only for a few seconds in the trailer is the villain of the Captain Marvel sequel. Zawe Ashton plays the antagonist, but we don’t know who she is.

Her appearance in the trailer answers two mysteries, though – she is wearing a Kree bangle identical to Kamala’s, solving the mystery about the pair, and that’s her connection to The Marvels. In the fight between the villain and the titular superheroes, we even see her use the bangle to stave off attacks from the trio and use purple energy constructs like Ms. Marvel.

We meet Kamala’s family again in the trailer, Nick Fury seems to be back in action after Secret Invasion, and whether they like it or not, The Marvels have to work together to find a way out of their conundrum.

Despite showing them in the trailer, the teaser trailer didn’t give much information on Zawe Ashton’s villain or Parasite star Park Seo-Joon’s mystery character. But hopefully, SDCC 2023 will provide us with a longer and even more exciting trailer for the November film.
