Marvel Studios have dropped the official teaser for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The movie was first announced at the San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, and it was confirmed that Simu Liu would be playing the lead role.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and with a predominantly Asian cast, the movie is set to be a major move in terms of representation for the MCU.
The teaser trailer, which came out yesterday, shows a first look from the upcoming movie, including Liu as the new Marvel superhero. Coincidentally the clip came out on Liu’s birthday, who turned 32. Check out the teaser here:
The actor is joined by Awkwafina, who plays Shang-Chi’s friend, and Tony Leung as his father, Wenwu. Other cast members include Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan, Fala Chen as Jiang Li, and Ronny Chieng as Jon Jon.
The trailer’s highlight is, of course, all the martial arts action, which is spectacular. Even though Netflix’s Iron Fist was the first Marvel project to feature martial arts, it was whitewashed by the casting of Finn Jones as Danny Rand.
But, it seems Marvel is doing better with its casting as Shang-Chi features an Asian-led cast, and Liu masterfully excels in all the fight scenes as seen in the teaser.
His character is pitched against many villains. Among them is one wearing a red, white, and black mask and the other with a glowing sword who seems to be the Marvel comics villain Razor Fist (Florian Munteanu).
Furthermore, according to the teaser, the movie will also feature grand-scale battle scenes. But, how they fit into the movie’s narrative remains unclear, as some appear to be parts of flashbacks.
Since the teaser also gives brief looks into Shang-Chi’s childhood, it would make sense then to delve into the history of the Ten Rings.
However, one aspect the teaser keeps away is Shang-Chi’s superhero costume which he dons in the movie’s official poster. A likely indication that there’s more to be revealed by Marvel, the wait for the trailer begins. Check out the official poster here:
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is set for release on September 3, 2021.
