X-Men has not yet made its official MCU entry, but Marvel is surely establishing ownership of Wolverine with a new PS5 video game.
The unexpected reveal of Marvel’s Wolverine happened at the PlayStation Showcase 2021. This will be Marvel’s second video game that will be a PlayStation-exclusive, following 2018’s Spider-Man.
The RPG is being developed by Insomniac Games, a gaming developer that many fans regard to be the backbone of Marvel’s video games. Here’s the cinematic trailer:
The video opens up in a bar laden with dead bodies and debris, Logan on a lone barstool sipping his whiskey. From behind, an injured person (presumably an adversary) stands up and approaches Logan with a knife. The shot ends with Logan’s claws appearing out of his knuckles.
Fans may be surprised about the unexpected trailer, but quite frankly I’m surprised to see Wolverine in his cowboy hat.
The teaser does not contain the gameplay or the plot. The setting does look like a bar in a southern USA state, or/and a remote, rural town. This may be the starting point of the video game’s story that then explores one of Wolverine’s established lore.
“Being developed” is important to keep in mind — the teaser may have been released, but work on the video game is still ongoing and as of yet does not have a definite timeline or release date.
But here’s what we do know: The video game will be part of the same universe as Insomniac Game’s Spider-Man 1, which has nodded to other Marvel characters (Doctor Strange, the Avengers, Daredevil, etc) as well within the game.
Introducing Venom and Kraven, the video game’s sequel Spider-Man 2 is set to release in 2023. One can expect Wolverine to be out around the same timeline or after Spider-Man 2.
One thing is clear: Marvel is moving forward with building its new, cohesive video game universe as well, in collaboration with Insomniac Games.
