Martin Crane’s Absence Will be Addressed in Upcoming Frasier Reboot

Producer and actor, Kesley Grammar confirmed that the upcoming Frasier reboot on Paramount+ will address Martin Crane’s absence due to John Mahoney’s death.

After being in development for two years, the reboot is finally happening by the orders from Paramount+. As of now, only Kesley Grammar’s return as Frasier Crane has been confirmed. Aside from that, not much is known about the project.

The reboot will not feature one of the most beloved characters from the original series, Martin Crane. John Mahoney, who played Martin Crane for 11 seasons on NBC, passed away back in 2018. At that point, Grammar was still trying to pitch the idea of a Frasier reboot.

Martin was an integral part of the series. His signature humor, cheery disposition and fatherly affection made him a delight to watch. His absence in the upcoming reboot will surely be felt.

In a conversation with PIX11 News, Kesley Grammar confirmed that the upcoming reboot will address Martin Crane’s absence on the show. The actor reaffirmed that the new project will see his character in a different city, starting the last act of his life.

Of course, John [Mahoney] is gone, we’re gonna be dealing with that in the show.

The original Frasier was itself a spin-off of another sitcom, Cheers. Frasier’s return to Seattle from Boston was a calculated narrative strategy to set the stage for his own spin-off. But it was Martin’s move to live with him that really set the tone right for the sitcom.

After suffering an injury in his career as a policeman, an older Crane moved in with his eldest. The contrasting personalities of Crane and Frasier gave the show a fun dynamic to play around with. While Frasier had expensive taste, Martin was more of an easy-going Everyman.

Throughout the years, their relationship evolved into something much deeper, so it will be difficult for Frasier to lose his dad. We are yet to see how the Frasier reboot handles this, but it won’t be surprising if this becomes the emotional core of the series.

It is also unclear whether the Frasier reboot will see the rest of the original cast. It has been confirmed previously that they will be returning as guest stars, but not series regulars. However, much of the original Frasier’s success can be attributed to its ensemble cast. We hope Paramount+ will try to bring most of them back even if it is for cameos only.
