Animation Studio MAPPA Opens a New Studio Specialized in CGI in Osaka

The dominance of Studio MAPPA in the Japanese anime industry is increasing by the day. The way it is advancing is very shocking for many business personnel and the fans as well, as the studio is well known for big projects like Attack On Titan, Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Hell’s Paradise.

Masao Maruyama founded MAPPA in June 2011, and Manabu Ohtsuka is the company’s CEO. The company currently has around 250 employees and has studios in Tokyo and Sendai.

MAPPA has decided to establish a new studio specializing in CGI in Osaka City and making it more accessible to neighboring prefectures. Yusuke Tannawa is appointed as the Director and General Manager of the CGI Department.

The Osaka studio is intended to specialize in one of the most controversial animation graphics, CGI (Computer Generated Imagery). The CGI department is subdivided into six teams: 3DCG, background, finishing, photography, editing, and design. All the details are listed on the official website of MAPPA.

The reason behind opening a studio in Osaka City is that it is easily accessible from neighboring prefectures. Moreover, creators and students living in Kansai can use this golden opportunity to fulfill their dreams in the animation industry without leaving their hometown.

The installation location for the studio will be decided by 2022 and preparations for opening will be made afterward. Other than that Yusuke Tannawa is appointed as the Director and General Manager of the CGI Department.

The rest of the staff members will be recruited very soon as Mappa has opened up the recruitment process on their official website for the animators in the CGI department. This could be a greater opportunity for people who want to build their careers in the animation industry.

I’m happy that MAPPA can use this as an opportunity to refine their CGI (which was already pretty decent) and expand their workforce to keep up with the unnecessary workload.

I still dislike the employees being worked to the bone, but hopefully, this outcome will help in strengthening their resources than constantly outsourcing as they do now.
