The film’s production committee wishes to caution the audiences that although the earthquake alarms featured will sound realistic, they are fictitious, and the audience must not be alarmed upon hearing it.

The Tweet asks the cinema audience to remain calm when they hear the sounds and not confuse them for an actual earthquake alert, in order to avoid any confusion or fear among moviegoers.

Although depictions of earthquakes aren’t uncommon in Japanese media, they are a sensitive subject because of the few devastating earthquakes. Due to this sensitive nature of the subject, it is common for many Japanese movies and anime to issue warnings about earthquake and tsunami-related content prior to the release.

The film follows a 17-year-old girl named Suzume who hails from a quiet town in Japan, Kyushu. A chain of events is set into motion when Suzume discovers a mysterious, weathered door standing in the midst of ruins in the mountains.

She reaches for the knob which causes several more doors to appear and open across Japan, unleashing destruction, and catastrophe upon all those near them. Thus, Suzume’s journey begins as she attempts to close all these doors or portals to prevent further disaster.

It is expected to release internationally sometime in 2023, with distribution outside of Asia being handled by different parties.

  • Crunchyroll will manage North America
  • Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment will manage South America, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, and some parts of Europe
  • Wild Bunch will handle distribution in French and German-speaking parts of Europe.
