The live-action version Barbie has reportedly found her Ken in La La Land’s Ryan Gosling. According to Deadline, Gosling is in the final stages of negotiations to play the boy doll in the upcoming movie.
Margot Robbie will be playing the titular and everyone’s favorite Barbie while also producing it under her LuckyChap Entertainment banner. Deadline’s report also states that Gosling has been the first and the last choice for the iconic character. With his sleek physique and handsome visuals, we completely understand Warner Bros.’s vision to have him.
Although, getting Gosling on board wasn’t easy. The Notebook actor has been busy with multiple projects and recently wrapped up his Netflix action movie The Gray Man alongside Chris Evans. Schedules clashed, and he refused the initial offering.
As luck would have it, pre-production got delayed, and the studio’s persistence of having him play Ken led to a bit of free time on his plate. Ultimately, he agreed to sign on.
If and when Gosling gets confirmed, the Hollywood industry will have a new A-list couple to gush over. Having the Canadian actor and the Australian actress share screen in a refreshing new Barbie take will definitely be the talk of the town.
Barbie will be directed by Greta Gerwig, who’s known to be one of the few female filmmakers applauded for her incredible outlook on movies. She led the critically acclaimed The Little Women in 2019 and Lady Bird in 2017.
Gerwig has joined hands with Noam Baumbach as co-writers for Barbie. The duo has previously worked together in reversing roles for the popular 2012 movie Frances Ha.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last year, Margot Robbie teased that Barbie will be unlike anything fans might be imagining.
Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, “Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,” but our goal is to be like, “Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted.”Margot Robbie
If the cast gets confirmed, the movie could be shot in 2022 and released in 2023.
Barbie is an upcoming American movie based on the iconic Mattel doll and directed by The Little Women director, Greta Gerwig, who co-wrote the script with Noah Baumbach.
The movie stars Margot Robbie in the lead role as the toy doll, and she also is the producing the movie under her banner LuckyChap Entertainment. Ryan Gosling is in talks to play the leading man Ken, reportedly.
No additional information about the plot, characters or actors has been released, however, the movie is expected to go on floors in 2023.
