The official website of Luminous Witches announced on Friday(August 27) that the anime production committee has decided to postpone the anime release to 2022 due to “various circumstances”.

Luminous Witches, short for “Allied Air Force Magical Idols Luminous Witches,” is a spinoff of the mixed media franchise Strike Witches, previously slated to premiere in 2021. 

The story centers around a special squadron of witches who do not fight yet protect the smiles of people forced to flee due to war. These special witches harness the power of music and Idol costumes to drive off despair and sadness. 

So unlike the main series, which focuses on magical girls doing aerial combat Lumious Squadron prefers to move people’s hearts with music.

The spinoff started with an actual idol group comprised of the main anime cast in 2019, followed by an ONA by Studio Shaft next year. Additionally, Studio Shaft is also animating the upcoming anime series with director Shouji Saeki at the helm.

Luminous Witches are already a pretty big name in the franchise partly because of various albums released by the idol group. The idol group has also sung the theme song of the anime series titled “Flying Skyhigh.”

The upcoming series is sure to be a must-watch for any Witches fan out there, and on the positive side, more time means a perfect opportunity for newcomers to catch up.

The franchise has been adapted into numerous light novels, manga, anime series, and several video games.

The series revolves around teenage girls who use machines attached to their legs to indulge in fantastic aerial combats with well-done fanservice constantly running in the background.

The first episode, which was an OVA preview, was released on January 1, 2007. The TV anime adaptation, later on, was broadcasted in July 2008.

The first episode aired on July 3, 2008. The second installment arrived in July 2010, and the third season is scheduled for October 2020.
