J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy book series’ film adaptation, The Lord of the Rings, had only briefly mentioned this colossal evil, writing him up as a vague and feared myth in Peter Jackson’s films. But LOTR’s spinoff series, The Rings of Power, has unveiled more about the franchise’s true villain, Dark Lord Sauron’s master, Morgoth.
The fantasy show, set 3000 years before the events of The Hobbit and the LOTR films, will see the rise of Sauron and the forging of the rings of power. The TV series, currently streaming on Prime Video, premiered on September 2, 2022, with two episodes.
Galadriel, the elfen warrior, narrated the events of the great war of Middle Earth’s First Age, explaining Morgoth’s attack on the realms that lasted for centuries, costing thousands of lives, including her brother’s.
Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films centered on Sauron’s villain, but his power is nothing compared to his master’s. According to Galadriel’s monologue about the destructive war on Middle Earth, Morgoth led his first attack in Valinor.
The humongous shadowy figure with a spiked helmet loomed over the burning trees of Valinor, then moved on to the realms of Middle Earth, leveling destruction at a massive range. This appearance accurately follows Tolkien’s description of the character, which inspired Sauron’s look in the LOTR films.
But how is Morgoth the true villain of the LOTR franchise? Sauron, powerful as he was, was not nearly as cruel and destructive when it came to power as his master Morgoth.
The Rings of Power places him as the true villain of the First Age war and Sauron as his lieutenant. Even with the rings’ power, Sauron never shied away from acknowledging Morgoth’s superiority.
But will LOTR fans see Morgoth in Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power? Probably not. As seen in the first episode, Morgoth has been defeated, and the days of his gruesome war have passed, giving way to temporary peace.
Even though LOTR has posed Sauron as the centric villain, be it in the films or the spinoff series, Morgoth is clearly the more powerful and more fearsome villain, and thus the franchise’s true villain.
