Disney+ Greenlights The Muppets Mayhem Series with Lilly Singh

The Muppets are returning once again, and this time they’re here to rock it out with The Muppets Mayhem series on Disney+.

The studio wasted no time in announcing the 10-episode comedy series with Lilly Singh in the lead, finally moving forward after being stuck in development hell for quite some time.

It will follow the Electric Mayhem Band and its journey of recording its first-ever album. Singh is set to star as the human lead, Nora, who is the junior A&R executive tasked with managing the band.

Electric Mayhem Band debuted in The Muppet Show in 1975. And if the Electric Mayhem is reuniting, it’s no surprise that the band members Dr. Teeth, Animal, Floyd Pepper, Janice, Zoot, and Lips will have the central stage.

Dr. Teeth (voiced by Bill Barretta) is on vocals and keyboards, Animal (Eric Jacobson) on drums, Floyd Pepper (Matt Vogel) on vocals and bass, Janice (David Rudman) on vocals and lead guitar, Zoot (Dave Goelz) on saxophone and Lips (Peter Linz) on trumpet.

Production is expected to begin in April on the series, which is being described as “a music-filled journey in which the 45-year-old band comes face to face with the current-day music scene as they attempt to go platinum.”

Adam F. Goldberg, Barretta, and Jeff Yorkes are developing the series based on characters created by Jim Henson. The trio will also serve as writers and producers with Michael Bostick and Chris Eber. David Lightbody and Leigh Slaughter of The Muppets Studios exec produce.

In a statement from Disney,

“We are so excited to bring the story of the Electric Mayhem Band to the front and center of this new series. They’ve been entertaining audiences since The Muppet Show, which debuted 45 years ago, so it’s wonderful that these characters are finally getting to play lead rather than supporting roles.”

This marks Disney’s second attempt at a Muppets scripted comedy series after the first one, Muppets Live Another Day, was scrapped when creators Josh Gad, Adam Horowitz, and Eddy Kitsis parted ways due to creative differences.

The Muppet is one of the most popular IPs in Disney+’s content library, which includes The Muppet Show, Muppets Now, a Halloween special titled Muppets Haunted Mansion, and Muppet Babies on Disney Junior.
