Liam McPoyle is Back After 7 Years in ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’

Jimmi Simpson announces his comeback to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16 after a seven-year hiatus.

Simpson plays Liam McPoyle, a recurring character in the comedy series that belongs to a bizarre and incestuous family. The McPoyles have a history of conflict with the Paddy’s Pub Gang, dating back to their childhood. Their antics include holding the Gang captive and almost marrying outside the family lineage, which cost Liam an eye.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant about his role in the drama The Starling Girl, Jimmi Simpson revealed that he would reprise his role as Liam McPoyle in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16.

He did not disclose much about the comeback, but he hinted that it would be a “ridiculous” episode featuring the popular characters. Below are Simpson’s quotes and video:

Oh yes, it’s coming. I was with Charlie for his movie, Fool’s Paradise, and he said the edit’s quite ridiculous. I was like, “I haven’t done this in eight years. Who know if I will be able to do it again? I’m getting weird!”

The McPoyle family have been a staple of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia since their introduction in the season 1 finale.

The recurring characters, who openly engage in incest and boast a long family tree, are a source of comedy that would otherwise be repulsive or tragic in different contexts but have been amusing in their various episodes.

The McPoyles have been absent from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia for seven years, which is surprising for fans who expected them to show up at least once a season and wreak havoc for the Paddy’s Gang.

Their last episode, which involved Liam suing Bill Ponderosa for his lost eye at his and Maureen’s failed wedding, was not only humorous but also featured the cameo of Guillermo del Toro as McPoyle patriarch, Pappy.

The trailer for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16 revealed that Liam and Ryan will be back, apparently as workers at a bowling alley that the Paddy’s Gang visit.

It is unclear if this will lead to another disaster or a tense reunion, but Simpson’s hint of a “ridiculous” comeback is sure to keep fans of the show eager for its June 7 premiere.

About It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is an American sitcom created by Rob McElhenney, who developed it with Glenn Howerton. It is executive produced and primarily written by McElhenney, Howerton, and Charlie Day, all of whom star alongside Kaitlin Olson and Danny DeVito as Mac, Dennis, Charlie, Dee, and Frank.

The series follows the exploits of “The Gang,” a group of friends who run the Irish bar “Paddy’s Pub” in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They’re known to be quite amoral and narcissistic with a crude sense of humor.

With its 15th season (and early renewal till season 18), It’s Always Sunny has become the longest-running live-action of all time.
