Developers Naughty Dog are trying to prove a point to the broader fanbase here. They want to show that the Last of Us franchise can sustain itself without the over-used but favorite character Ellie.
Ellie’s story was left dangling at the end of Last of Us 2, and she has not been given full closure yet. This means that Last of Us 3 could efficiently be designed to pick up right after Last of Us 2 and focus on Ellie’s story, giving the multiplayer game a sound opportunity to distance the IP from Ellie in a spin-off involving an entirely new set of characters.
ViewerAnon, a reputed Last of Us leaker, has revealed that Last of Us 3 is currently in production, and significant filming for the game will occur in 2023. The new characters Lucas, Val, Ezra, Mason and Gracie will feature in Last of Us’ upcoming endeavors.

The multiplayer spin-off unrelated to the Last of Us franchise’s mascot characters, Ellie and Abby, would explain the need for a new cast.
It is speculated that in the new multiplayer Last of Us title, the player will be a customizable character who would be involved in Lucas, Val, Ezra, Mason and Gracie’s lives somehow.

Also possible is that each mainline character and chapter will somehow relate to Ellie, given that she is the person the entire story is based around.
In Ellie or Abby’s absence, the new set of characters would have little to no impact in terms of user reception. It will be interesting to see what the developers finally come up with – both for the multiplayer title and the third instalment to the Last of Us series.
Fans of the franchise await news and details on this front. Hopefully, some form of PvP and PvE will be within survivor groups contesting for supplies and survival.
Only time will tell what Naughty Dog does with the upcoming Last of Us 3 and Last of Us multiplayer. It will be interesting to see the new characters, be it in the multiplayer spin-off or Last of Us Part 3.
