The Far Cry franchise achieved monumental success with the third instalment in the series, Far Cry 3. It was one of the highest-grossing games ever, critically acclaimed for the antagonists’ plot and design.
The game that set it all off, Far Cry 1, was a game ahead of its times. However, it did not reach the level of success the next couple of titles did.
In late June, the source code for Far Cry 1 appeared mysteriously on the Internet Archive. This was spotted by reputed leaker and modder @VinciusMedeiro6. The file was named Far Cry 1.34 Complete and contained the game’s engine, CryEngine v 1.34.

This leak has been of great joy to modders and other community enthusiasts looking to build on the nostalgia of the first Far Cry title.
Many suggested that the source files be compiled and checked for compatibility with PS Vita and Nintendo Switch. This would be great news for the fans if the source code compiles and runs.
Some fans are going a step ahead to suggest they would love to see backward compatibility with the 3DS. Ports to other devices and consoles are also being discussed by the user who spotted the leak.
Before the source code was released, a group was working on reproducing the Far Cry 1 title from scratch. However, this would make life easier for the community.
Since the source code has not been out for a long time, what the fans will do with it remains to be seen. The source of the leak is also a mystery.
Earlier, a GitHub repository was found that had all the texture and information files for the weapons in the game. However, the source code was missing and could not be compiled.
Efforts like this will ensure that Far Cry 1 is remastered, reworked, or at least ported to the new-gen consoles. Fans hope they can soon play a reworked version of this nostalgic game with better graphics and relive the original Far Cry experience.
