On January 30, SM Entertainment announced the opening of yet another global audition. This time, the agency also hinted at extending its SMCU (SM Cultural Universe) by naming it KWANGYA.
KWANGYA 2022 SM Global Audition will open for applications from January 31 to February 20, divided into three weeks. The first round will be entirely online while the second will be offline.
For Week 1 (January 31 to February 6) applications, results will be announced on February 12. There will be either an on-site or a video call audition on February 19 and 20, respectively.
For Week 2 (February 7 to 13) applications, results will be announced on February 19. The on-site or a video call audition will later be held on February 26 and 27, respectively.
Lastly, for Week 3 (February 14 to 20) applications, results will be announced on February 26. The on-site or a video call audition will later be held on March 5 and 6, respectively.
The final results of the auditions will be announced on March 19.
For eligibility, any individual, regardless of gender and nationality, can apply, as long as they are born between 2003 and 2011.
The procedure for the KWANGYA 2022 auditions needs participants to film videos in their respective talent: Rap, Vocal, Dance, Acting, or any other skills that highlight their potential as artists.

The term KWANGYA (English translation: Wilderness or Forest) holds significance to SM Entertainment. It is both an area in the company’s building and a part of a fictional universe created by the agency for their SMCU – a Marvel-esque fictional world featuring all its artists.
Naming the latest global auditions as KWANGYA seems to suggest that there is much more to the SMCU, and upcoming groups, which will probably debut 5-6 years down the line, will also be a part of it.
