The last chapter was an eye-opener for both the readers and Ei Sei. He came to get Kanki’s head for killing thousands of men, but it became a journey of self-realization.
We also get a glimpse of Kokuou never giving up on Kanki, no matter how sketchy things look. She also refuses to live with the Zhao people under the same banner.
Sei ultimately decides to pardon Kanki, not because of the noble reasons he cited, but because he knew he came to him without solid reasoning. Will this affect his outlook regarding war?
1. Chapter 700 Discussions and Predictions
In the last chapter, Kanki taught him the who’s who and what’s what of war. Sei had come for Kanki’s head without properly thinking about the significant role he had himself played in the killing of all these people.
Some anti-Sei fans are thrilled they got to see someone patronize him and put him in his place. Although some fans are still horrified with what Kanki has done and know that it’s mainly his fault.

5. Chapter 699 Recap
Kanki tells Sei, in no uncertain terms, that he’s the one responsible for all these deaths. Even his own soldiers are surprised that he would talk that way to the emperor.
Kokuou nevertheless takes it in her stride and calls him the biggest murderer among them all. As she’s about to continue cursing the emperor out, Sei stops her in her tracks.
He treats their words as childish drivel, but Kanki is not letting the subject go. Sei reminds him how he had never permitted him to cull his prisoners, and Kanki tells him it was only an outcome of a war he had started.
Since it was a war Sei started, he must be the one to pass judgment on Kanki’s evil deeds. Kanki tells him, his evilness pales in comparison to Sei’s.
Sei says he will not permit any of the current six greats to become like Haku Ki, one of the previous six greats who had buried 400,000 prisoners alive.
Sei explains how badly it would affect their future campaigns and ultimately their dream of unifying China, something he’s earnest about.
Kokuo says she will never be buddies with Zhao. No matter what unification plan, she will hunt down every last Zhao, the people responsible for killing Raido.
Kanki says that Sei might have good intentions of unifying China under one banner. Still, the people will never agree to make friends, and there will be warfare even after unification.
He then asks Sei to get on with his punishment. If he decides on taking Kanki’s head, he should know that he would die here too, and the dream of unifying is as good as dead.
Sei pardons him, citing Maron’s explanation which Kanki points out he had found inadequate initially. Sei then cites his military achievements to have contributed to his decision.
Sei and his entourage leave Kanki with a few threats here and there. As he sits down beside mountains of skulls to comfort himself, Shin arrives, and the best friends meet at last.
