Kafka makes an epic appearance in chapter 82 of Kaiju No. 8, titled “Watching Him from Behind a Mask.”

The wait is finally over, and we have our protagonist back in the game after a really long time. It has been so long that the fans are even joking about seeing a new character at the end of the chapter. 

We got some flashbacks where Shinonome remembers how she always wanted to grab Narumi’s attention and how she worked hard so that her senpai could notice her. Not sure whether he did or not.

Still, I don’t think Kafka is on par with the new Kaijus. It will be a tough battle for him, and there are chances that he might have to team up with some other platoon leaders to defeat #13.

Also, he will only be able to deal with #13, and it is impossible for him to handle all the areas, so I am interested to see how the other platoon leaders will hold off against these strong enemies.

The situation has worsened as the destruction area slowly expands, and the leaders are in a bad state. Rin Shinonome has lost all hope as the Kaijus are way above their level.

Platoon leader Tachibana has suffered serious fractures in various parts of his body. The headquarter orders Shinonome to back up asap. She stands up again and starts firing at the monster, with 73% released force.

The Kaiju loses its grip on Tachibana and rushes for Shinonome. #13 throws a heavy punch at her and throws her away. The attack is so hard that she goes into a flashback and remembers when she wanted Narumi to look her way. 

Narumi was always interested in nothing but power. He wouldn’t look at Shinonome, who was just another troop member. So she trained very hard and was appointed the platoon leader by Narumi. 

She was elated with her success, and now she can’t give up just because she has no chance of winning. She throws a grenade at #13 and starts firing at him.

She thinks that if she can hold them off for even a while, it will help Narumi a lot. However, #13 appears behind her, unfazed, and throws her down the building with one punch.

She reflects on the fact that she is the platoon leader of the first unit, and it is her duty to risk her life for the country. However, she still doesn’t want to die.

To end it all, #13 prepares for one final blow. He attacks Shinonome but finds she has disappeared beneath his hand. The next thing he sees is Kafka holding Shinonome.

Kafka apologizes to Shinonome for disobeying her orders, but he is not ready to just stand by.

Kaiju No. 8 or Monster #8 is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Naoya Matsumoto. It has been serialized for free on Shueisha’s Shōnen Jump+ from July 2020.

In Japan, creatures are known as kaiju frequently attack the nation with the Japanese Defense Force in charge of dealing with and killing them.

Childhood friends Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro vow to become members of the Defense Force after a kaiju destroys their home. Mina becomes a famous commander of the Force while Kafka fails the exam multiple times and becomes a monster sweeper, those in charge of cleaning up a monster’s dead body.

One day a small talking kaiju enters his body through his mouth and he can now turn into a Kaiju himself. This is dubbed “Kaiju No. 8” by the Defense Force.
