3. Recap of Episode 12

Episode 12, titled “Confidential File 707, The Land of Blessed Words,” starts off with Elena trying to stop Sawa from doing something stupid as it could get her killed.

However, Sawa has chosen to murder the shogun Yoshinobu Tokugawa. She asks Elena to look after Asahi if she doesn’t return.

Sawa then proceeds to go to the Shogun’s residence. Guards surround her as she reaches the place.

As Sawa prepares to battle them, she is caught and taken off by a dark crow Changeling. The Changeling talks to her, after which she realizes that it is Jin Kuzuhara.

Sawa is shocked to see Jin consume the drugs and has many questions for him. She assaults Jin for lying for his entire life, yet he won’t battle her, expressing that he genuinely needed to protect her.

Jin promises Sawa that he will deal with Yoshinobu himself. He travels to the castle and discovers Yoshinobu as a slight, scared elderly person after Jin provided him with a fake treatment rather than the Karasumori mixture.

Jin executes Yoshinobu as the Kuchinawa storm the castle and set it ablaze. Jin feels a sense of relief as he perishes in the fire.

On her way home, Sawa is lethally wounded by Rinko. Sawa somehow figures out how to get back to her bookshop, where she sits in harmony with Asahi who is ignorant of the injury as life gradually fades from Sawa’s body.

In an epilogue set years after the incident, Asahi is presently seventeen years of age with Elena’s girl, Satsuki. She is reading from the journal which Sawa and Asahi planned to fill together.

Asahi reflects on her past and her promise to be like Sawa, protecting others. The episode ends with the white crow landing on Asahi’s shoulder, recognizing her as the continuation of the Karasumori bloodline.
