The Jonathan Majors Saga: How His Arrest Could Impact the MCU’s Plans

On March 25, MCU actor Jonathan Majors got arrested due to allegations of strangling, assaulting, and harassing his 30-year-old girlfriend.

Majors has been making significant efforts to prove his innocence, with his lawyer stating that he can actually be considered as the “victim” and that there is enough substantial evidence to back it up. As a consequence of these charges, Majors’ acting career is already taking a hit.

Majors is best known for playing the role of Kang in the MCU’s last theatrical release, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. His character, Kang, is considered to be the next major villain in the MCU and is expected to feature in several of the upcoming projects.

However, in the light of his recent arrest, Marvel Studios might have to reconsider his involvement in the franchise. In this article, I will explore all that you need to know about Jonathan Majors’ arrest and what it means for his Marvel career.

1. Why Was Jonathan Majors Arrested?

For the uninformed, Jonathan Majors was arrested on March 25, 2023, in New York City for allegedly beating and strangling his 30-year-old girlfriend. Majors is facing charges of sexual assault, domestic violence and harassment.

As per reports, the NY police received a 911 call from the victim at 11 am from a Manhattan neighborhood of Chelsea. The victim reportedly had minor injuries on her head and neck. She was immediately taken to an area hospital in stable condition.

2. Statements Made by Jonathan Majors’ Lawyer

According to Majors’ spokesperson, the actor is not guilty of any wrongdoing, and they aim to prove his innocence in due course. In an email to the AP, the representative stated that they look forward to clearing his name and resolving the matter.

On the following day, Majors’ lawyer, Priya Chaudhry, took a more assertive stance and claimed that Majors was indeed the victim of an altercation with a woman he was familiar with. Chaudhry attributed the incident to the woman undergoing an emotional breakdown.

Majors was released on Saturday night after a judge ordered him to appear in court on May 8. He faces misdemeanor charges of assault and aggravated harassment, according to the Manhattan district attorney’s office.

The NYPD did not respond to an email asking for more comment on Chaudhry’s claims on Sunday. Chaudhry said Majors had a history of mental illness and was not a threat to anyone.

3. The Impact on Jonathan Majors’ Career

If the allegations are proven, this can majorly impact Majors’ career in Hollywood. In fact, following the charges, Majors has already been dropped from an ad campaign and as a client by various agencies. His growing career with the MCU is also under threat as of now.

The U.S. Army halted its TV ad campaign that featured Majors and aimed to attract young people. The U.S. Army Enterprise Marketing Office said in a statement Sunday that it was “very concerned by the allegations related to his arrest.”

Here’s the statement made by the Marketing Office –

“While Mr. Majors is innocent until proven guilty, prudence dictates that we pull our ads until the investigation into these allegations is complete.”

His talent manager Entertainment 360 dropped him because of the allegations of assault and harassment. He also played the next big villain after Thanos in the MCU but may lose his future role there. The actor has also been dropped as a client by his former public relations agency, The Lede Company.

4. Jonathan Majors’ Career in the MCU

Marvel Studios has not made any decisions regarding the future of Kang actor Jonathan Majors in the franchise, after his arrest. The studio has been in touch with Majors’ agent to “talk about possible options going forward,” insider Jeff Sneider said on The Hot Mic podcast.

“I’ve heard that Marvel hasn’t made any decisions regarding Jonathan Majors but they’ve met with or spoken to his agent to discuss potential options going forward.”

Majors had already filmed his next MCU role as Kang Variant Victor Timely in Loki Season 2 – but there are rumors that more Kangs will appear in the Disney+ series. His character, Kang, is also expected to feature in many upcoming MCU movies, all building up to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which will revolve around Majors’ character.

The studio will likely need more time before making a decision on what to do with Jonathan Majors in the franchise, after his arrest and the subsequent developments. They will not want to act hastily or impulsively, especially since Majors’ team says they have a lot of evidence to prove his innocence.

Marvel Studios is facing one of its biggest challenges in this situation, as they have built their entire saga and the next three years of storytelling around Kang. It is also important to consider that almost all the limited praise for Quantumania was for Majors’ performance and the curiosity generated by his character.

Given the circumstances, it’s understandable that Marvel Studios executives are still in talks with Majors’ representatives, and maybe even Majors himself, to consider all potential options.

These options may include continuing to work with Majors, reducing the scope of Kang’s character, or even replacing him with another prominent actor. It’s likely that there will be many more developments in this situation in the upcoming days and weeks, and it will continue to be a complex issue to address.

5. About Marvel Cinematic Universe

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is an American media franchise and shared universe centered on a series of superhero films and TV series, independently produced by Marvel Studios and based on characters that appear in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.

The franchise includes comic books, short films, television series, and digital series. The shared universe, much like the original Marvel Universe in comic books, was established by crossing over common plot elements, settings, cast, and characters.
