Even though the film is more than a year away and production has just begun, the DC fandom is quite excited for the Elseworlds sequel about The Bat’s most famous archnemesis. Joker was recently tagged in the Elseworlds category, which gives director Todd Philips the freedom to stray from canon.
The Joker director has shared a few images on social media featuring Joaquin Phoenix’s return as Arthur Fleck, a.k.a The Joker. Joker: Folie à Deux will center around Joker’s life after being put into Arkham Asylum, where he meets Dr. Harleen Quinzel, who eventually becomes his maniacal partner, Harley Quinn.
Soon after the film was announced, Lady Gaga’s appearance as Harley Quinn was also confirmed. Since we know the sequel will be a musical and the first comic adaptation to do so, the singer’s involvement was met with much excitement.
But so far, we hadn’t gotten a glimpse at the artist as the clown killer, except in a short teaser where we could only see the silhouettes of the two leads. But Philips just shared a new shot from the 2024 film, revealing the first look at Gaga as Harley Quinn. The post, captioned with “Happy Valentines Day,” features a close shot of the villainess with Arthur, probably in Arkham Asylum, with his Joker paint faded. You can view the original post below:
The duo stares into each other’s eyes with what seems like newfound love or passion, a faint smile on Phoenix’s lips, and wonderment in Gaga’s expression. A lovely picture on the day of love, if only it wasn’t the beginning of a toxic and psychopathic love story.
We know little about Joker: Folie à Deux, but we’re guessing the film will be from Harley’s point of view and how she met Joker, which changed her life. Gaga’s character will be quite different from Margot Robbie’s clown act, and I don’t know about you, but I’m very excited to see her bring something new to the role.
There is much mystery surrounding the movie’s plot, but we might have more news once filming is complete in the latter half of this year. Maybe a sneak peek at Gaga in costume at the San Diego Comic-Con? We’ll just have to be patient for now.
