Jason Statham’s Meg Sequel Starts Production, Gets Official Title

On February 4, Variety reported that the famous monster-shark sequel of The Meg has started filming in the U.K. The sequel also has a final name—Meg 2: The Trench.

Jason Statham will be reprising his role as Jonas Taylor, the U.S. Navy rescue diver on a mission to save people from the prehistoric killer shark. The 75-80 feet megalodon would naturally be back again, but is seemingly deadlier this time.

While the information remains scant, BingBing Li will also return as the oceanographer Suyin. The actress featured alongside Statham to rescue the underwater research facility team from the megalodon.

A fun fact about Statham not many viewers might know is that the actor is a professional-level, world-class diver. He represented the U.K. at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. Knowing he is a prolific diver would make Meg 2: The Trench more fun.

News about The Meg sequel hit the public in 2020 when the film took a new director on board—Ben Wheatley from the Kill List and The Wicker Man. Reports also state that the movie might feature two megalodons to take the sequel up a few notches.

Upping a highly famous original is a task in itself, but it seems like the team will be upping the stakes by diving much deeper into the ocean. The name suggests more eerie experiences through the trenches.

Experts say that only 5% of the world’s ocean is known to man. So while the remaining 95% is left up to people’s imaginations, ocean horror movies such as Jaws and The Meg try to fill that gap.

The Meg, released in 2018, became an instant hit, grossing over $530 million at the global box office with a budget of $130 million.

No cast or plot information has been revealed yet, but viewers can look forward to set photos and interview clips from the stars and the crew in the future.
