James Gunn has directed both the Guardians of the Galaxy films and the Holiday Special in the MCU and is returning in the director’s seat for the last adventure of the OG Guardians. Now the filmmaker has revealed the real protagonist of the GOTG film series just before its premiere in May.
In an interview with Empire via The Direct, Gunn revealed the secret protagonist of the film series. Read his full quote below to know the real protagonist of the GOTG films:
I would say Peter’s kind of a mess. I think he’s suffering from major detachment issues. For me, [Rocket] was always the secret protagonist of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. You’ve never seen Rocket in any film not do something altruistic. He’s never done anything other than for his friends. He’s not a hero in the typical sense of the word. Telling his story was really important to me.
Our confusion is apparent since all the GOTG films and even the 2022 Holiday Special painted Pratt’s Peter Quill as the main protagonist. But we know from Gunn’s interviews and the trailer for the upcoming 2023 film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s primary focus will be Rocket’s origin story.
Based on said trailer and Rocket’s lines, some theories suggest the character will die at the end of the final GOTG film. So, it makes sense to reveal his real identity as the secret leader of the film series at its last run.
Rocket’s origin story has been one of the biggest mysteries of the film series, and we’ll finally know where he came from, who created him and how, and we’ll also discover his history with Lylla the Otter.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will premiere in theaters globally on May 5, 2023.
