Kang Refers to Thor in Quantumania Clip: Is the God of Thunder dead?

As the MCU’s next big project, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, gears up for its release, Marvel Studios has been dropping quite a few promotional clips featuring Kang the Conqueror.

Kang is being set up as the next major villain of the MCU and it’s something to worry about for the Avengers because he seems to have killed many of them before!

In the latest Quantumania clip, we hear Kang boasting about killing “the Avenger with the hammer”. No points for guessing who that is! It seems like even the God of Thunder could not hold himself up in front of Kang.

But if we hear what Kang says word by word, it isn’t clear whether Thor is dead or not. Even if he is, he must be dead in one universe. Let’s not forget we live in the era of multiverses!

Before we move on to if Thor is really dead in Quantumania or not, watch the teaser that caused all the fuss here:

Thor may have been killed by Kang in one of the multiple universes within the MCU. However, it does not affect his presence in other universes or in the MCU at large. As of writing, it is not clear when and where Kang killed Thor.

Is Thor dead in the MCU?

No. First of all, we’re not sure whether Thor died in the hands of Kang in any universe. In the Quantumania teaser, when Kang meets Ant-Man for the first time, he asks him if he has killed him before as he has killed Avengers before.

We are not sure which Avengers he was referring to but it is clear that Kang exists in several universes. If at all he has killed Avengers, it will be in another universe. In the last teaser, he asks Ant-Man if he is the “one with the hammer”.

Here’s the entire conversation for your convenience:

Kang: “You’re an Avenger? Have I killed you before?”

Ant-Man: “What?”

Kang: “They all blur together after a while. You’re not the one with the hammer?”

Ant-Man: “No, that’s Thor. We get confused a lot, similar body types. Who are you?”

Ant Man and Kang Conversation

Kang’s words give the impression that he may have killed Thor in one of the universes, though he does not explicitly mention it. Just because he asked about Thor does not mean he has killed him previously. He may have remembered him because he made an impression on him.

This is more probable because Kang himself mentions that the Avengers all become blurry after a while. (I could bet a thousand bucks that was Kevin Feige’s way of taking a dig at non-MCU fans who claim to get confused by so many heroes!) Despite them being all ‘blurred out’ for Kang, he quite interestingly remembers Thor.

This only means that he has made an impression on Kang whenever they may have had a face-off. It is not clear whether Kang actually killed him or he escaped. But the important part is even if he did die at the hands of Kang, it doesn’t make a difference.

What Kang Killing Thor Could Mean

Thor’s apparent death will not affect his life in the other universes. In fact, since Thor seems to be a bit of a favorite of Kang, this comment might set up a majestic face-off between the two in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

Phase 5 is a build-up to the face-off we will see in The Kang Dynasty between Kang and the other Avengers. It is highly probable that Thor will get his chance to take revenge on Kang in the film, if not earlier.

We are not sure if we will ever see the Thor and Kang face-off Kang refers to in Ant-Man 3, but we can surely hear more about it in the film. Let’s wait for the film to arrive for more clarity.

Will Thor appear in Ant-Man 3?

As of now, there are no reports of Thor making an appearance in Ant-Man 3. Though we will surely get a lot of references to Thor as well as other Avengers, they may not appear in the film in person.

But never say never! We will only find out everything on February 17, when the film hits theaters!
