The Emmy-winning Handmaid’s Tale has graced our screens for five seasons, depicting a sexist dystopia that eerily reflects a mindset that is prevalent even today. In particular, it follows June, a “Handmaid” who is forced to have children for the elite class.
With season 5’s finale recently out, I’m sure you’re wondering if the show will have a season 6. So, has The Handmaid’s Tale been canceled or renewed?
The Handmaid’s Tale has been renewed for season 6 which will serve as the show’s last season. It may air in the latter half of 2024.
Season 6 was an early renewal that came before the premiere of season 5. As this will be the season that wraps up the show, let’s get into all the details concerning it!
When will The Handmaid’s Tale S6 release?
Given the early renewal, it’s possible that the production for season 6 is already underway. This may make it possible for The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 to air in late 2024.
A majority of the seasons have had 10 episodes in total, so it is possible that The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 may consist of 10 episodes as well. However, since this is the show’s last chapter, they might increase the episode count if it serves the ending well.
Returning cast will include Elisabeth Moss, Bradley Whitford, Yvonne Strahovski, Max Minghella, O-T Fagbenle, Ann Dowd, Madeline Brewer, and Sam Jaeger, among others. There are even some rumors that Alexis Bledel may return for the swansong season after exiting at the end season 4.
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Plot
There will be quite a few intricate subplots that the show will have creative freedom to explore, but the crucial questions remain — Will June ever rescue Hannah from Gilead? Will they be able to live a happy, safe life together? Moreover, will the unjust Gilead be overthrown?
The latter seems too much to achieve in just one season (and might be explored in the spin-off series!) but there is still hope for June. Currently, she is on a refugee train to America, joined by her nemesis Serena. Season 6 may once again explore their dynamics.
As of S5’s finale, we’re also left wondering about the fates of Nick, Luke, and Janine, all who got arrested for defying their respective orders. Season 6 may deal with their storylines in more detail.
Does The Handmaid’s Tale have a spinoff?
Yes, it is confirmed that The Handmaid’s Tale will have a spin-off series titled “The Testaments” sharing the same name as its book counterpart.
This story takes place 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale and even retains some of the characters from the original story. So, it is possible that the show may leave us with a few loose ends in season 6 that will tie into the spin-off.
As of now, there are no confirmed production details about the spin-off. Make sure to watch this space for more!
