O to the M to the G — Extraordinary Attorney Woo is Renewed for S2!

When it made its streaming debut, Extraordinary Attorney Woo dethroned many shows on Netflix’s Top 10 list and went on to become the most watched Korean show of 2022. Usually, shows on Netflix tend to lose traction by their 5th-6th week, but Woo is still going strong with its finale scheduled for August 18.

K-drama veterans know that 80% of K-dramas don’t get renewed for another season, no matter how good they are.

Does Extraordinary Attorney Woo fall into the same category? Will it get renewed for S2? Well, I have some good news for you!

Extraordinary Attorney Woo has been renewed for S2. If schedules permit, most actors will reprise their characters and the drama can be expected to air sometime in 2024.

The show’s ratings were not always this great, with Ep 1 holding down low viewership during its TV premiere on ENA (a relatively less popular channel). But as the tale unfolded, it turned into an upward journey.

Why was Extraordinary Attorney Woo renewed?

Extraordinary Attorney Woo follows Woo Young-woo, who is South Korea’s first autistic attorney. She gets a late employment offer at Hanbada Law Firm, where she tackles different types of cases in each episode.

The show offers a never-seen-before contrast in experiences between what we term “normal” versus those on the spectrum, especially when it comes to social and emotional intelligence. While the episodes do dip into social commentary, Woo herself is such a unique, endearing character, that she manages to win over hearts all round.

Perhaps this positive reception is why Lee Sang Baek, CEO of AStory, which is producing the show, stated to a Korean media outlet that the show may come back for S2 in 2024.

That’s not all — as we wait for the next season, AStory plans to release the drama as a 60-episode webtoon drawn by illustrator HwaUmJo and written by Yuil. Fans can also expect to see a musical based on the story.

Why is Extraordinary Attorney Woo releasing in 2024?

2024 seems like a long wait since we know that K-dramas usually only take 2-3 months to film. In fact, most dramas film their episodes only a week or two before airing them. Since Extraordinary Attorney Woo is such a hit, wouldn’t it be better to release it sooner than later?

The decision could have something to do with the show’s lead male actor, Kang Tae-oh who plays Lee Joon-ho. As per South Korea’s mandatory military enlistment requirement, Kang is reported to be enrolling either in August or September 2022. His term will only end sometime in early 2024.

In his statement, CEO Lee made a comment about how the production team wishes to come back in its full capacity, retaining all of the original cast. While he didn’t mention Kang in particular, it could’ve been a nod to his enlistment.

S2’s plot majorly hinges on what will go down in the finale. It may continue with its episodic format of focusing on Woo’s individual cases, but it may explore Myung-seok’s health, Woo’s relationship with Joon-ho, and her past with mother Soo-mi.
