Is Dokyuu Hentai HXEros worth watching? – Full Review

The story of Dokyuu Hentai HxEROS (Dokyū Hentai Eguzerosu) follows Retto Enjou, a high school student who joins the superhero team “HxEROS” in order to combat the evil “Kiseichuu”, a race of alien invaders that feeds off of the collective sexual energy of the human race.

It is a Japanese ecchi love comedy manga series written and illustrated by Ryōma Kitada. The manga has 900,000 copies in print and the anime television series adaptation by Project No.9 premiered in July 2020.

1. Quick Review

The story of Dokyuu Hentai takes place in a world headed towards extinction. Five years ago, libido-devouring monsters had taken over the planet, draining human beings of their sexual desire also known as “H” energy.

The aliens do this in order to decrease the birth rate of humans which will, in turn, result in their extinction.

Retto Enjō and Kirara Hoshino are childhood friends who have drifted apart from each other after an incident that took place when they were younger.

One day, the estranged friends are caught in a battle against a “Censor Bug” that feeds on human’s sexual energy to evolve.

After successfully taking down the enemy, they join a group of heroes like them, using the erotic power of the HxEROS force to fight off monsters.

Despite the obvious controversy that comes with an ecchi anime, the direction, animation, and the story itself has been skillfully handled.

The series plays out like a parody of every action anime that has ever existed which brings with it some rather amusing scenarios.

Dokyuu Hentai HXEros is quite entertaining. It has got an absurd storyline with a comical and fun twist that will definitely surpass viewer expectations. Or at the very least, leave you stupefied.

The characters are described as typical teenagers who are still discovering all there is to know about their own sexuality and their own bodies.

The anime plays it out both as a comedy and also propagates the normalcy of sexual desire as a part of human emotions.

I. Plot

The plot revolves around an alien species called “Censor Bug” or “ Kisseichuu” which invades Earth. These alien invaders absorb the “H” energy from human beings which is the sexual desire of human beings, rendering them extinct.

To save the planet from extinction, high school boy Retto Enjō joins the “HxEros” team, along with four beautiful high school girls, one of whom is his childhood friend Kirara Hoshino.

Kirara, however, has drastically changed her personality after being attacked by a Censor Bug. This leads to an estrangement between the two childhood friends.

The anime introduces the “Heroes” who use wrist-watch like devices called Xero gear to save the planet from the alien invaders.

The one unfortunate side effect of the gear is the destruction of the wearer’s clothes when they power up. The Xero gear runs on the power of Ecchi, h or human energy (H), and erotic power (Ero) to fight against evil.

II. Characters

Retto Enjō is portayed as a sweet boy who has taken up the responsibility of fighting the alien invaders. He wants to stop these aliens or “Kisseichuu” from stealing human emotions from people like they had done to his childhood friend, Kirara.

In the first episode, we see a flashback of how Kirara Hoshino was when she was younger. She seemed to be more outgoing and playful.

After the Censor bug attack, she had become different – colder and more distant, unwilling to have any contact with boys, including Retto.

After the traumatic incident she had faced in her childhood, Kirara had to come face-to-face with a Kisseichu again. This time, Retto and her together are able to combine their “H” energy to eliminate the alien.

After seeing how Retto was protecting the world from aliens which attacked her, she decides that she wants to be a part of the HXEros team.

Towards the very end of the first episode, we are introduced to the remaining three members of the team -Momoka, Maihime, and Sora.

They sense the Kisseichuu attacking Retto and Kirara and come to help them out. All five of them together form the superhero HXEros team.

III. Setting

The anime series is set in an urban city called Saitama.

IV. Theme Songs

The opening theme song for the series, “Wake Up HxERO!”, was performed by the rock band Burnout Syndromes, performing as HxEros Syndromes. The song features Yoshitsugu Matsuoka performing as his character, Retto Enjō.

The ending theme song, “lost emotion”, was performed by Ai Kakuma as her character, Kirara Hoshino.

Dokyuu Hentai HXEros is one of those anime that is bizarre and yet carries itself pretty well to be a fine comedy. It is lighthearted enough to never make you feel really uncomfortable. If you are open-minded, into ecchi comedy or just want to have a good laugh, then this show is right on the money.
