Masaki Yuasa’s Anime Film Inu-Oh Earns Golden Globe Nomination

On December 12, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees for the 80th Golden Globe Awards. Masaka Yuasa’s musical anime feature film Inu-Oh is nominated in the Best Motion Picture – Animated category.

The other films in the category are Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio from Netflix, Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, andPixar’s Turning Red. Inu-Oh is the only anime film in the running for this category this year.

The film is based on the novel Heike Monogatari: INU-OH no Maki, written by Hideo Furukawa and is the third anime feature film to be nominated for a Golden Globe. Previous anime films were Hayao Miyazaki‘s The Wind Rises and Mamoru Hosoda‘s Mirai.

The film is about Inu-Oh, who is born to an esteemed family but is also inflicted with an ancient curse that has left him on the margins of society. However, he discovers the captivating ability to dance when he meets the blind musician Tomona.

Inu-Oh and the young biwa priestess quickly become good friends and inseparable. The film follows their journey as they sing and dance while trying to uncover the truths behind their creative gifts.

The film began screening in US theaters on August 12 and the movie earned 97,062 USD on its opening day. It was screened in approximately 350 theaters.

About Inu-Oh

INU-OH is a musical anime feature film of Hideo Furukawa’s Heike Monogatari: INU-OH no Maki (Tales of the Heike: INU-OH) novel. The film made its world premiere and competed in the Horizons (Orizzonti) category at the 78th Venice International Film Festival.

Inu-Oh is born with unique physical characteristics, and the horrified adults cover every inch of his body with garments, including a mask on his face. One day, he meets a boy named Tomona, a blind biwa player, and as Tomona plays a delicate song of tangled fate, Inu-Oh discovers an incredible ability to dance.

Inu-Oh and Tomona become business partners and through the songs, Inu-Oh mesmerizes his audiences on stage, and gradually begins to transform into someone of unequaled beauty. But why is Tomona blind? Why was Inu-Oh born with unique characteristics?
