The official Instruction Set guide by Intel revealed some interesting details about the upcoming Granite Rapids-D architecture. It is a new Xeon-D lineup optimized for communications and network applications. However, the series is expected to launch in 2024, i.e., two years after the Ice Lake-D series.
Intel Granite Rapids-D will be different from the SP and AP variants, which are specifically designed for data centers. The Xeon-D series will feature two options– HCC (High Core Count) and XCC (Extreme Core Count). Despite having different configurations, both will be using the BGA-4368 socket.
The HCC variant will feature one Granite Rapids LCC compute die, one I/O die and four memory channels. Meanwhile, the XCC variant will have one Granite Rapids HCC compute die, two I/O dies and eight memory channels.
With two I/O dies, the XCC variant can offer more connectivity and flexibility for PCIe Express 5.0 and 4.0, CXL interface, Ethernet and Accelerations. The first die will handle these functions while the second one will offer extra options for Ethernet and Accelerations.
The leaked motherboard layout of the Granite Rapids-D shows the detailed design and options for networking and connectivity.
The Intel Granite Rapids-D is currently in development. Intel is yet to confirm which Xeon Granite Rapids variant will be launched first. However, the company is making good progress as is evident from the official roadmap.
