Intel Halves Arc GPU Driver Size From 1.3GB to 0.6GB

Intel has announced that they’ve significantly managed to decrease the size of their graphics driver. The software engineering team of Intel were tasked to lower the 1.3GB driver package which was a pretty considerable size for a graphics driver.

The Intel software engineering team has managed to reduce the size of the graphics driver from 1.3GB to 604MB, thanks to ‘smarter compression algorithms’. Even though the size isn’t that small, it’s now on par with AMD’s driver (599MB) and less than NVIDIA (859MB).

The increase in the driver’s size was due to the embedding of Arc Control Software and Iris GPU drivers under one package a few months back. But Intel has finally managed to decrease the size of their graphics driver.

Intel not only managed to optimize the game driver, but also optimized the file size. To be specific, the original Arc graphics card has a capacity of up to 1.3GB, the previous version of the driver has a capacity of 0.9GB but the newly released 31.0.101.4255 driver has only 604.1MB.

“Good things come in small packages — the Intel Arc graphics driver package, specifically. This latest driver release punches above its weight, now down to 604 megabytes from nearly double that when the Intel Arc desktop GPUs launch in October. Our engineers put the old 1.3GB driver download on a diet with smarter compression algorithms. This means faster updates so you can Game On even sooner with less bandwidth consumed, all with zero compromises in performance or features made.”

It’s worth noting that both AMD and Intel GPU drivers support both mobile and desktop graphics, while on the other hand, NVIDIA offers two separate packages.

Since the Arc A7 desktop GPUs were announced, Intel has been very active in driver development and the company is now way ahead of NVIDIA and AMD in providing “Game On” drivers for recent game releases. The latest driver available for download is the 4255 driver and it features optimizations for Diablo 4.

It’s good to see that Intel is continuously optimizing the driver and in the past few months, they’ve shown that they’re steadily improving the driver of the Arc graphics card. Even though details of what exactly Intel has reduced in the driver files are unknown, it’s certainly a good thing for the already bloated driver.
