Kotoko comes to the rescue in episode 3 of In/Spectre season 2 titled “The Yuki-Onna’s Alibi”.

As Masayuki comes under suspicion for the murder of his ex-wife,  the interrogation gets even more intense as they pile evidence against him while he has no alibi to prove himself innocent, leaving him in a dire situation.

Yuki-Onna seeks the help of her goddess of wisdom, Kotoko, and she immediately begins launching accusation after accusation against Masayuki, much to the despair of the Yuki-Onna. The result remains to be determined.

Episode 4 Speculation

The next episode will likely involve Kotoko’s plan to get an alibi or find the culprit responsible for the murder of Miharu. With all odds stacked against Masayuki, the situation seems hopeless, and only a goddess could bring them out.

Moreover, Masayuki and Yuki-Onna’s relationship deepened after the act that Kotoko showed, which made her even defy a goddess for his sake. This will rebuild Masayuki’s ability to trust people and have some faith remaining in society.

Recap of Episode 3

The episode begins with the scene of a crime, the murder, with blunt force due to a deep-seated grudge. Her husband claims he hasn’t seen her in ages, and the officials reveal that she was plotting to kill him.

The officials go over the details of the crime, the motive, and their divorce. He says they found a letter in Miharu’s house that said if she was killed, to arrest him for whatever reason, maybe suspicion immediately.

She says that he purposefully made it seem that the divorce was on good terms, not to appear suspicious when she died. They also seemed a bit dubious about him; apparently, there was a writing on her hand that said Masayu.

Further, they ask him where he was on September 12, and they have evidence that he was with a woman that looked like Miharu. He guarantees it wasn’t her and is taken to the police station for more questioning.

At night, he returns home and talks about it with Miharu. He doesn’t have an alibi to present to the police since his only evidence is that he was with Yuki-Onna.

He lets it slip what he thought the first time he saw her and that he still wasn’t over the divorce and leaving Miharu. He decides to find the real culprit and thus prove his innocence, but Yuki-Onna stops him.

She feeds him dinner and makes him rest, but he still cannot find true peace of mind. She decides to take him to Kotoko to get help and find the real culprit if anyone could do it, and it was her.

Kotoko and Masayuki exchange introductions and she also talks about her dinner situation where she is forced to eat cold food. She asks him to tell her the exact date, and she stammers and isn’t able to.

For this reason, Yuki-Onna’s alibi is not solid enough to prove his innocence; thus, even the idea that she could be used as a witness is out of the question. Kotoko even charges accusations against him, with solid reasoning, and even accuses him of manipulating the Yuki-Onna.

Masayuki goes against her story, and the Yuki-Onna is trembling in fear. Kotoko lays out all the facts on the table and accuses him head-on of controlling Yuki-Onna and creating an elaborate plan for revenge.

The Yuki-Onna takes his side and begs Kotoko to reconsider as Masayuki tries to console her. Eventually, Kotoko gives in and says that she was lying the whole time and that she knew he was not the culprit the entire time.

Kotoko finally gives in and says she will help them out, much to their relief.

In/Spectre (Kyoko Suiri) is a novel series written by Kyo Shirodaira and illustrated by Hiro Kyohara (Vol. 1) and Chasiba Katase (Vol. 2 onwards).
