Will Hugh Jackman Return as the MCU’s Wolverine?

In 2017, Hugh Jackman received a warm send-off for his iconic role of Wolverine. But now, Jackman’s recent Instagram stories hint at re-opening the doors to the Logan legacy.

First, Jackman shared a Wolverine fan art by artist and art director Bosslogic. Emerging from a pitch-black background, Wolverine’s hand with his claws out is depicted in the piece.

The next day, Jackman posted a picture on his story of him and Kevin Fiege, who is Marvel’s creative chief. Fiege, in fact, had been in talks with Jackman about his clawed character, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Both posts in proximity have sent fans into a frenzy—could this be a hint for Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine in the MCU?

While Jackman departed from his role due to several reasons, including age issues for the 52-year-old with having a shredded body for his action sequences, he was also once caught admitting he would love to play Wolverine in the MCU. At the time, however, Fox still had full control over the X-Men franchise and Logan’s inclusion within the MCU seemed unlikely.

But a few years down, Marvel finally has plans of rebooting the newly acquired X-Men. When the news broke out, there were speculations on who might be chosen to play Wolverine.

But of course, there is a wait. Marvel’s Phase 4 is set on introducing new players like Shang-Chi and The Eternals as well as building up the younger Avengers team. It is believed that through the Eternals, the X-gene, which is the cause of mutations in the X-Men, will be explored in the MCU.

We are most likely to catch a glimpse of the X-Men only in Phase 5, which will be 3-5 years down the line.

Marvel’s reboot will be righting the substandard creative decisions that led the X-Men series to its sad demise. But through all the gray clouds, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine has always been a fan-favorite and, more admittedly, the shoulder that carried the franchise.

We’re unsure in what capacity Wolverine could appear in the MCU. There is a high chance that the canon in Fox’s movies may not be included in the MCU at all. In that case, a new actor could also be cast as Wolverine, akin to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

Whether Jackman’s post was simply nostalgic or a hint to a future project, will remain unknown until Marvel reveals all its cards.
