How to defeat Garm? – God of War: Ragnarok Guide

Garm is another boss you’ll face during the main story. Garm is a huge wolf that you’ll face in Helheim and its boss fight can be very challenging, especially if you’re playing on a harder difficulty. For a creature that size, it’s very agile so you have to keep an eye on it.

Garm jumps around the combat area very frequently, and attacks you with the chain that it was locked with. It also tries to bite you and launches projectiles at you from its mouth and it has 10 segments in its health bar. This guide will help you in successfully defeating the wolf.

There are two phases in the boss fight and we’ll tell you all the moves it uses during both the phases.

First Phase

First Phase of the Boss Fight

During the boss fight’s first phase, Garm will use all of the following attacks:

1. Ice Shockwave: Garm will send ice shockwaves on the ground by pounding its forelegs on the ground. You can either block, parry or dodge this attack.

2. Bite Attack: This attack will be indicated by a red ring so you can’t block it. So, you have to dodge away from the bite.

3. Multiple Bites: These bites will be indicated by a yellow ring which means you can either block it or parry it, depending on your shield.

4. Chain Strike: Garm will whip its change towards you, all you need to do is dodge and roll away from it and then freeze the chain using your Axe. You’ll then be able to pull the chain and stun Garm. Unleash all you have, as Garm will be stunned for quite some time.

5. Ice Projectile: At the end of the fight, Garm will climb on platforms and shoot ice projectiles towards you. Dodge them, as you cannot block them, or either wait for him to come down or throw the projectiles back on him.

After you’ve completely depleted its health, you’ll have to play a quick time event where Kratos will choke Garm with its chain. You’ll think that it’s read, but it’s not. After you progress through Helheim a bit, Garm will show up again.

Second Phase

Second Phase of the Boss Fight

In the second and final phase of the fight, Garm will use the same moves. But when it comes closer to you, use the Draupnir Spear and throw it at the golden shackles on its neck and legs and then explode them using Triangle on your controller. This will significantly deplete Garm’s health before it regenerates again.

Atreus will then say that he has an idea. Deplete Garm’s health until the final R3 prompt appears. Now, there’ll be a quicktime where you’ll have to repeatedly press Circle and let Atreus climb its back. The cutscene will end with Atreus stabbing Garm with his knife and transferring Fenrir’s soul to it, hence changing its nature.
