The long-awaited trailer for DC’s Blue Beetle finally dropped on April 3, 2023. As previously announced, the movie will star Xolo Maridueña as the titular character.
Blue Beetle is one of DC’s most powerful heroes, and with a solo movie now, the character has the potential to open up more possibilities for the DCEU. This film will also be the first one to feature a Latino superhero in the lead.
There are three known iterations of Blue Beetle, but this movie will focus on Jaime Reyes’ version.
Jamie Reyes is a Mexican-American teenager who lives with his family in El Paso, Texas. When he finds a Scarab, a device of alien technology and artificial intelligence, it comes alive and attaches itself to Jaime’s spine.
The Scarab forms a powerful suit of armour around Jaime that gives him the ability to endure the harshest of conditions, as well as fly, create all kinds of weapons with nanotechnology, and scan for human presence.
How strong is Blue Beetle?
Blue Beetle is considered one of the strongest superheroes in DC.
When Jaime is in danger, the Scarab surrounds him with a dazzling blue high-tech exoskeleton that gives him involuntary defense powers and an AI to communicate with.
The Blue Beetle suit provides Jaime with high durability, superhuman strength and the ability to fly. It can withstand extreme conditions like the heat of a rocket launch, tornadoes, re-entering Earth’s orbit and high-speed bullets.
The suit also has wings and rocket boosters to allow Jaime to fly at super high speeds. With all the strength that the Blue Beetle suit gives Jaime, he could potentially even survive bomb blasts with it.
Jaime’s Blue Beetle is so strong that he was able to take down Spectre, one of DC’s most powerful supervillains, in the comics.
What powers and abilities does he have in the comics?
Besides durability, flight, and super strength, the Scarab offers Jaime a wide range of powers and abilities.
The Blue Beetle suit can construct all sorts of weapons using nanotechnology like blades, maces, shields, plasma cannons, swords and grappling hooks.
The hands of the suit can generate energy blasts strong enough to discharge Kryptonite radiation and manipulate energy and vibration to neutralize magic.
Jaime’s other abilities include pyrokinesis, mechanokinesis, drone creation, human detection, making invisible objects visible, and translating both human and alien languages.
The most lethal power of all: the suit’s “infiltrator mode”, which can be activated by Jamie in emergencies by communicating with the in-built AI. The Scarab will take full control over the suit and use brutal force to eliminate the enemy.
What powers will he have in the DCEU?
The Blue Beetle trailer gives us glimpses of the suit in action, where we see Jaime travelling all the way to outer space, and coming back down to Earth in a matter of seconds.
Jaime creates weapons from his own imagination and cuts a bus in half with his wings, in an attempt to protect himself. We also see him in combat where the suit helps him deflect bullets and survive a fiery explosion.
Early on in the comics, Jaime has trouble bonding with the Blue Beetle suit and this prevents him from realising his true potential. The Scarab’s AI then ends up taking full control of Jaime’s powers even when he disagrees with its methods of fighting.
Over time, Jaime and the Scarab strike up a friendship that allows Jaime to have more control over the suit. The two eventually learn to become a unified and unstoppable fighting force.
This is the storyline we can probably expect to see in the upcoming DC Film.
Blue Beetle is set to release in theatres on August 18, 2023.
