How Many Titans are There in the MonsterVerse?

In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Monarch confirmed the existence of more than 17 Titans. However, the film trailer only included the number 17 in it, causing fans to assume that there are only so many Titans on earth.

If you’ve forgotten, let me refresh your memory.

Dr. Ishiro Serizawa explains to Dr. Mark Russell that excluding Godzilla, there are “17 and counting” Titans discovered by Monarch. The 17 Titans excluding Godzilla are Kong, Mothra, Rodan, Behemoth, Methuselah, Mokele-Mbembe, Scylla, Abaddon, Bunyip, Baphomet, Leviathan, Tiamat, Sekhmet, Yamata No Orochi, Typhon, Quetzalcoatl, Amhuluk.

Now you must be wondering why I (or Serizawa) haven’t included King Ghidorah, or simply Ghidorah and MUTO in the list. The answer is simple. The conversation between Mark Russel and Serizawa about the number of Titans takes place before Ghidorah came into the picture.

There were instances where it appeared as though Serizawa was trying to conceal information about a few Titans. Especially about Ghidorah, whom Ilene Chen speculated to be an alien species. But why was Serizawa hesitant to talk about Ghidorah?

The film mentioned that Ghidorah was being studied as a purely off-the-books Titan. However, a reason wasn’t revealed. Monarch had gone out of their way to keep Ghidorah a secret. This must be why Serizawa had conveniently excluded Ghidorah in his count.

And as for why MUTO isn’t included in the count, it must be because the species were not identified yet. It must also be because of the fact that it doesn’t have the word ‘Titanus’ in its name, yet. It can be said that MUTOs are giant monsters, but that doesn’t have to mean that they are Titans.

But then, MUTO had come to the battle site and bowed down to Godzilla with the rest of the Titans. So for now, we can assume that MUTOs are also Titans.

Before I get into details, let me talk about some of the events of the film.

Ghidorah lay dormant in Antarctica until a certain self-entitled woman (Dr. Emma Russel) claimed to save the world (Yeah, right!) and woke him using a bioacoustics instrument called ORCA.

Now, Ghidorah just ups and assumes Alpha’s role, wakes the rest of the dormant Titans, and orders them to wreak havoc all around the world. Several humongous Titans wake from their slumber and get to work destroying cities, wherever they are.

Of course, questions about what monsters counted as Titans began circulating among the viewers of the films. Many were even confused about the number of Titans that existed.

Fear not. I got you covered. Despite Serizawa mentioning 17 Titan species, at least 20 names of Titans appeared on the Monarch Facility screen. The upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong will also officially introduce some of the names that have appeared.

I will talk about all the Titans in detail, one by one. Quite a few of them made an appearance in the film, while some are yet to be seen. Please keep in mind that the below mentioned Titans are listed concerning the MonsterVerse. The list will also include Godzilla, Ghidorah, and MUTO.

Let’s get right into it.

1. Godzilla – The King of Monsters

“The top of the primordial ecosystem. A god, for all intents and purposes.”

– Vivienne Graham

Godzilla (or Gojira) is a giant reptilian Alpha Titan species, as seen in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. He is a territorial monster, and as described by Serizawa, he exists just to restore the balance that gets disrupted in his territory, earth.

Godzilla first appeared in the 2014 film Godzilla, where he defeated a MUTO pair destroying his territory. He also appeared in the post-credits scene of the 2017 film Kong: Skull Island, where he was referenced in the cave paintings.

Godzilla reappeared in the 2019 film Godzilla: King of the Monsters, where he fights with Ghidorah and reclaims his role as the Alpha.

2. King Kong – The Gentle King

“That’s Kong. He’s King around here. He’s God to these people.”

– Hank Marlow, ‘Kong: Skull Island’.

King Kong is a giant ape Titan, who is known as the King of the Skull Island. He first appeared in the 2017 film Kong: Skull Island. He will appear and battle Godzilla in the upcoming 2021 film Godzilla vs. Kong.

Kong is fierce and brutal whenever he is messed with. In Kong: Skull Island, he even threw trees at the helicopters that were flying (and bombing) in his territory. But if approached calmly, he is gentle and peaceful. He even went out of his way and saved Mason Weaver while engaged in a battle against that creepy Skullcrawler creature.

3. Mothra – The Queen of Monsters

According to Indonesian mythology, the name Mothra or Mosura means ‘Giver of life.‘ She appears to be one of the intelligent Titans, as was evident multiple times in Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

She showed special consideration towards human life and only attacked them when she was attacked, after waking up from her slumber, like a moth. She remained loyal to Godzilla, even after hearing Ghidorah’s call, and fought along with the former Titan.

Mothra Battling Rodan

Mothra is a giant lepidopteran Titan species, which battled another Titan, Rodan. She first appeared in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Ilene Chen called Mothra the Queen of the Monsters.

4. Rodan – The Neutral Man Friday

In the film Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Rodan appeared to be a neutral Titan, who only had allegiance to the Alpha Titan. To him, it didn’t matter who was at the top. He just obeyed the Alpha like a soldier.

Rodan, The Fire Demon

This can be proved when we look at how Rodan appeared to be faithful to Ghidorah when he was the Alpha. But he was also the first one to bow in front of Godzilla after Ghidora was defeated.

Rodan is a giant flying pterosaur Titan species. He battled Mothra and wiped out an entire squadron of the military. He first appeared in Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

5. King Ghidorah – The Alien Challenger

Ghidorah is a three-headed Titan, and each of his heads is named Ichi (middle head), Ni (right head), and San or Kevin (the left head). Each of his heads appears to have its own personality, even if they fight as one.

Out of all the Titans, Ghidorah is the most vicious one. He seeks destruction and particularly enjoys killing humans, as viewers can see a sinister smirk on one of the heads before they devour and destroy in their wake. He assumes the position of Alpha and wakes the rest of the dormant Titans.

MonsterVerse Ghidorah

Ghidorah or King Ghidorah is also called Monster Zero in the film. He is a giant alien three-headed dragon, and is the main villain of the film Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

6. Behemoth – The Dormant Brazilian

“Look at him. You think we have the right to just kill a god?”

– Mariko, ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’.

When Ghidorah awakens Behemoth and the other Titans, they are sent to hunt and cause destruction by the three-headed monster. But when Madison uses ORCA from the stadium to call off the attack, Behemoth rushed to protect his Alpha. He just appeared in time to witness Godzilla destroying Ghidorah.

Behemoth is a giant mammalian Titan, which lay dormant in a cave near Rio de Janeiro. He first appeared in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and is expected to feature in the upcoming film Godzilla vs. Kong.

7. MUTO – The Unidentified Terrors

MUTOs are Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms. The first pair of MUTOs appeared in the 2014 film Godzilla, both killed by the Alpha Predator, Godzilla.

Another MUTO appeared in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. He bowed in front of Godzilla to show his allegiance when Godzilla defeated Ghidorah in an intense battle.

8. Scylla – Greek Princess of Ice

Scylla quickly became famous among humans because of her greek legend and because she was having a positive impact on the global environment. Her body released liquid nitrogen, which helped slow down the melting of Antarctic ice.

Scylla is a giant armored cephalopod Titan, which first appeared in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. She appeared as a Titan that first obeyed Ghidorah after she awakened.

9. Methuselah – The German Hybrid

“My grandfather told me it wasn’t always there. There was a village instead. And then one day, a guy who was traveling in some other country came home. The village was gone, and that mountain was there.”

– ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ Movie Novelization.

Methuselah destroys Munich in the film, just like in the biblical legend. He was held in the Monarch outpost located near Munich, Germany.

Methuselah is a giant animal-plant-rock hybrid Titan, which appeared as a minor Titan in Godzilla: Kind of the Monsters. He first obeyed Ghidorah and then Godzilla.

10. Leviathan – The Scottish Sea Giant

Monarch found leviathan in Scotland, and just like other dormant Titans, they built a research outpost around it. His name also appeared over the screen in the film Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

According to the Bible, Leviathan is a giant sea creature created by God. It is usually described as a snake-like crocodile or whale. His name could mean “something that is massive and powerful.”

11. Mokele-Mbembe – Killer of Rivers

Mokele-Mbembe was held in the Sudan outpost of Monarch. He breaks free from the facility upon being awakened by Ghidorah and kills the agents present there. However, he does not reach in time to see Godzilla become the new Alpha.

Mokele-Mbembe depicted in a battle with another monster

Mokele-Mbembe is a giant elephant-like Titan that appears in Godzilla: King of the Monsters briefly, apart from his name appearing on a monitor in a Monarch facility. His name means “one who stops the flow of rivers.”

12. Tiamat – Georgia’s Water Goddess

Tiamat was located in Georgia in the US, and Monarch built an outpost facility around it. His name appeared on the screen like many other Titans, who were woken up by Ghidorah.

In some Mesopotamian mythologies, Tiamat was a primitive water goddess with a dragon-like appearance. More information on the Titan is not available as of yet.

13. Abaddon – Wyoming’s Fallen Angel

Abaddon is another giant Titan whose name appeared over the Monarch Facility screen, where Mark Russel and the team were discussing the awakenings. He laid dormant in the Monarch facility located in Wyoming. According to the biblical reference, Abaddon is a fallen angel.

According to Greek mythology, Typhon is Scylla’s father and a powerful snake-like giant. He was hailed as one of the most powerful creatures in mythology, as Zeus had to use his thunderbolts to defeat him.

15. Bunyip – Australian Swamp Monster

Bunyip is also a team Titan (haha) member, and like Abaddon, his name appeared over the screen in the facility. Bunyip was held in the Monarch outpost located in Uluru.

Mythical depiction of Bunyip

According to Australian folklore, ‘Bunyip’ is a mythical monster that resides in lakes, rivers, or swamps. And just like Abaddon, there is no more information available on the Titan.

16. Amhuluk – The Russian Winter

Amhuluk is a giant Titan found in Russia and had a Monarch outpost built around it. His name appeared on a screen in the film Godzilla: King of the Monsters. He woke up from his slumber along with other Titans to answer the calling of his Alpha, Ghidorah.

Amahuluk is said to be a creature in Kalapuya mythology, usually associated with disease and fog. He is said to have a pair of horns on his head and a body like a western dragon. More information is not available as of yet.

17. Baphomet – The Moroccan Goat

Baphomet lay dormant in the Monarch outpost located in Morocco. He is a giant Titan, which Ghidorah awakened, along with the other Titans, to destroy and hunt (humans).

Mythical representation of Baphomet

Baphomet was (in legend) a goat-headed demonic entity, falsely said to be worshipped by the Knights Templar. More information on the Titan is not available as of yet.

18. Yamata No Orochi – The Japanese Snake

Yamata no Orochi is a giant snake-like Titan that is said to have eight heads, according to a Japanese legend. Its name appeared on the screen in the film Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Yamata No Orochi

A Monarch outpost was built around Yamata No Orochi in Japan. He was woken up by Ghidorah but did not make it in time to witness Godzilla become the Alpha. No more information on the Titan is available for now.

19. Quetzalcoatl – The Snake God

Quetzalcoatl is another one of the Titans, whose name was mentioned on the screen in the film Godzilla: King of the Monsters. A Monarch outpost was built around him in Peru.

In Pre-Colombian cultures like Aztec and the Nahua, Quetzalcoatl was a feathered snake god. No more information is available about the Titan as of yet.

20. Sekhmet – The Lioness

Sekhmet is said to be a giant lion-like Titan held in the Monarch outpost built around it in Egypt. It is said to have cat-like features, more on the side of a sphinx or a lioness. She was woken up by Ghidorah after he became the Alpha.

In Ancient Egyptian mythology, Sekhmet is hailed as a warrior and healing goddess. She is depicted as a lioness whose breath was capable of forming deserts. Not much is known about the Titan as of yet.

Phew. There we go. These are all the known Titans in the MonsterVerse as of yet. But remember that monsters do not equate to Titans. So, species like the creepy Skullcrawlers, as seen in Kong: Skull Island, cannot be considered to be Titan.
