Here’s How MCU Projects Are Selected For Disney+

Marvel’s Executive of Production and Development, Jonathan Schwartz reveals storytelling is a key factor in deciding which projects should be Disney+ exclusives.

Marvel originals on Disney+ have had astounding results. Before the premiere of the first Disney+ show, WandaVision, a stray remark would’ve been that the characters/arcs chosen for Disney+ may not be as important as the feature films.

Now, with four shows down, the sentiment couldn’t be anything further from the truth — WandaVision gave us the powerful, yet tragic story of a grieving Wanda turning into the Scarlet Witch. Sam Wilson put on the armor of Captain America. Loki opened up the pandora box of the multiverse. And What If…? gives us a glimpse of what exactly an alternate reality would mean.

Without each of these developments, the big screen MCU would not be able to move forward. Or at least, not with the understanding, emotion or anticipation needed for upcoming films like Eternals, Spider-Man 3 and Doctor Strange 2.

But how does the studio themselves decide what goes to Disney+? In conversation with Collider, Schwartz explains it calls for a team discussion and outlining the tone and storytelling that would be used for the project.

What makes sense for Disney+? What makes sense for movies? What characters go where. We figure it out as a group. I think that what’s cool about Disney+ is it gives us the opportunity to tell stories that are maybe outside of the norm of what we would be able to do in movies that want a different canvas, that want a different structure, that are maybe a little weirder and wilder than we would have typically in the past been able to go in movies.

Jonathan Schwartz

This indeed has paid off in making Marvel more vivid and bolder than it already is. If I’m allowed to geek out for a moment — WandaVision’s format was beyond clever and beautiful, and its multiple Emmy nominations ratify it.

Schwartz also goes on to express that since the audience is getting used to the different types of approaches taken in these “smaller” projects, it is now also allowing the MCU movies to get more creative and push the envelope.

While Schwartz is always behind the scenes of several Marvel projects, he has most notably produced Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 and 2, Captain Marvel and the upcoming Secret Invasion, which will also find its home on Disney+.

If fans want to keep up with the big picture, it is best to spend the time in between movies with these Disney+ shows.
