Transformers: Rise of the Beasts puts the beloved Autobot’s life in jeopardy throughout the film. If you’re just back from the theaters, I have prepared comprehensive analysis of Bumblebee’s death and eventual revival in this article. Read on to find out!
Bumblebee joins Optimus Prime and his team of Autobots in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. The character has been a key figure in the franchise, as he formed bonds with the human protagonists in all five Michael Bay films before starring in his own solo movie. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts follows the rebooted timeline and once again features Bumblebee in a prominent role.
However, Bumblebee’s role in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts differs from his previous appearances. The film introduces Mirage as the new lead Autobot and pairs him with Noah Diaz, the new human hero. This allows Bumblebee to become Optimus Prime’s right-hand man and a brave fighter against the Terrorcons.
This also enables the film to make him an important factor in the plot progression and even the final outcome of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. The details of how and why this happens are unexpected. Here is an in-depth explanation of Bumblebee’s fate in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
Does Bumblebee die in Rise of the Beasts?
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts delivers a shocking twist when Bumblebee meets his end in the film. After witnessing the beam in the sky from the Transwarp Key, the Autobots rush to retrieve the potent device, unaware that Scourge and the Terrorcons are also pursuing it.
This results in a clash between the Autobots and Terrorcons for control of the Key. Optimus Prime engages Scourge in combat, while Arcee, Bumblebee, and Mirage confront Battlestrap and Nightbird.
As the Terrorcons gain the advantage and Scourge overpowers Optimus, Bumblebee intervenes to assist the Autobots’ leader. This is when Scourge slays Bumblebee.
Bumblebee’s demise in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts occurs after Scourge impales him through the chest and then shocks him. It renders his robotic body inert and Optimus Prime in shock that his ally has perished.
Viewers are likely to be as stunned as Prime after Bumblebee’s death because it has never happened in the movie franchise before. The comics have killed him a few times, including Marvel Comics’ 1980s series and more recently in 2006’s G.I. Joe vs the Transformers series.
Bumblebee also died in the animated series Transformers: Prime. Similar to these previous cases, Optimus Prime holds himself responsible for Bumblebee’s death in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
The death scene is further enhanced by its early occurrence in the film. Bumblebee is absent from Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ narrative for the whole of the second act as the Autobots encounter the Maximals in Peru.
He only appears as Optimus Prime tries to give him a dignified burial and admits that he lacks the power on Earth to revive Bumblebee. This allows the film to concentrate on other characters until Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ post-credits scene.
How is Bumblebee Resurrected?
Despite creating a lasting effect through his death, Bumblebee is revived in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. He makes a glorious comeback to action during the third act battle, as he leaps out of Stratosphere and joins the fight against Scourge, the Terrorcons, and the Predacons.
Bumblebee ultimately plays a crucial role in helping the team prevent Unicron’s invasion of Earth and is at the heart of the finale’s exhilarating battles. There might be some ambiguity about how Bumblebee’s revival occurs in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, as the movie mostly skips over the details of his return to life.
From the moment that Bumblebee dies, it does not take long for the Autobots to start debating if it was feasible to bring him back to life. Optimus Prime proposes that Bumblebee’s revival is possible with enough Energon and a powerful enough energy source.
However, he states that this is only achievable on Cybertron, motivating his desire to get the Transwarp Key and return home. What Optimus Prime is not fully cognizant of is that Earth is an Energon-rich planet, which allows the Autobots to later seemingly bury Bumblebee on a massive piece of Energon.
This still poses a challenge for Optimus Prime, as he does not have a means to use the Energon to revive Bumblebee. It is not until the two halves of the Transwarp Key are merged and used to create a portal station that the Autobots’ fortune changes.
As the Key powers up and opens a portal for Unicron, an energy blast activates all nearby Energon. This enables the substance to start to power up Bumblebee again because he is in contact with some of it. The Energon is potent enough to mend any damage caused by Scourge and rekindle a spark, allowing Bumblebee’s revival in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts to happen.
What Bumblebee’s Death & Return Means for the Franchise
Even if his fate is changed in the end, Rise of the Beasts benefits from Bumblebee’s demise. The movie has a large cast of Autobots and Maximals to explore, as well as new human leads.
Bumblebee is too significant of a character to be completely overlooked or marginalized, but Rise of the Beasts needed to shift its focus elsewhere. That is why it made sense for the movie to slay him. Without Bumblebee around, the franchise had the opportunity to enhance Mirage and Arcee’s roles, fully examine the Maximals, and more.
It is possible that Transformers: Rise of the Beasts could have achieved some of these developments without slaying Bumblebee. That would have meant confining him to a much smaller role, though, where he does not get as much to do, which could have elicited a negative reaction from audiences.
Since there was always a plan to bring Bumblebee back to life, his death becomes the best way to remove him from the story, deliver a shock, and increase the emotional stakes of the movie. It all made Bumblebee’s demise and revival in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts worthwhile.
