House of the Dragon E2: Daemon & Corlys Get Together to Rebel Against Viserys

Episode 2 of House of the Dragon featured the events that occur after Prince Daemon was removed as the heir of the Iron Throne and Rhaenyra Targaryen replaced him under Viserys’ command.

Following the death of Queen Aemma and her son Prince Baelon in childbirth, King Viserys and Rhaenyra mourn their family. Prince Daemon, Viserys’ brother, does not join them in grief and instead celebrates still being the heir to the Iron Throne.

After hearing the court members’ dissuasion of Daemon’s title as the Commander of the City Watch, his atrocious actions against the city’s people, and Dameon’s crude remark about Viserys’ son, calling him “Heir for a Day,” the King’s anger tips over. He strips Daemon of the inheritance of the Iron Throne and commands him to return to Runestone to his lady wife.

Viserys & Laena

Daemon, the rebellious and ambitious prince he is, runs off to Dragonstone with his beloved Mysaria, atop Caraxes. Meanwhile, Corlys Velaryon uses the death of the King’s wife and beseeches him to take his daughter Lady Laena as his wife. Viserys is not yet over his dead wife, but Corlys and his wife, “The Queen That Never Was” Rhaenys Targaryen, remind him of his duty to take a wife as king of Westeros.

Daemon steals the dragon’s egg that Rhaenyra had chosen to set in the cradle beside Prince Baelon, aggravating Viserys and Rhaenyra. Viserys sends his Hand to retrieve the egg, but Rhaenyra follows Hightower on Syrax and faces Daemon, retrieving the egg without bloodshed.

Daemon, shunned by his brother and shown up by his niece, seeks comfort in the arms of Mysaria, only to be turned away when caught in a lie that could threaten her life. Daemon has much to hold his brother in contempt for and is ready to take action, to rebel against the Westeros King. With perfect timing, Lord Corlys Valeryon offers him that chance at the end of the episode.

Stuck in a dilemma, King Viserys does not know if he should agree to marry the 12-year-old Lady Laena and gain House Valeryon as an ally or reject the Lord’s offer and risk making an enemy. But after some counsel and considering his affection towards Lord Hightower’s daughter, Lady Alicent, he decides to marry her instead of Lady Laena.
