Helck and Vermilio come across a suffering Demon Kingdom in episode 9 of Helck titled “Barbarians of the Tothman Tribe.”

After washing up on the shore of the continent, they’re taken prisoner by a weak demon tribe. They take Helck and Vermilio to their Kingdom, where they meet with the princess. She lets them go and tells them about their situation with the Tothman Tribe.

Helck and Vermilio sympathize with the Kingdom that was taken over by the Tothmans but doesn’t interfere. The Tothman King’s invasion interrupts their conversation, and Helck can’t stand back any longer.

Helck and Vermilio have already taken care of the Tothman tribe’s weaker members. However, the King is in a completely different league regarding power. After Helck sends him to the ground, he gets up with much more power than before.

It’s most likely that the King is under some curse imbuing him with uncontrollable amounts of power. He has already lost all control of himself and is completely entranced by the power instead.

A giant sea monster attacks Helck and Vermilio on their way to the Demonic Continent. Helck jumps at it to attack it mindlessly, but the monster resists all physical attacks and doesn’t take any damage. It grabs him and dives underwater with him restrained.

Vermilio could only scream at him to get back and eventually loses all hope. She returns to the island and sees Helck standing on the shore with a big smile. He reassures her that he will never die since he has a goal to accomplish.

Before they can enter the forest, they are surrounded by many weak monsters who take them to a village. On the way there, they talk about how the Tothman Tribe took down the entire Kingdom. They had a huge power-up over the last few months, and the Kingdom was taken over.

Suddenly, the Tothman King and a huge squad come to visit the Kingdom and start beating around the princess of the Kingdom. Helck interferes and tells the King to stop. The entire tribe comes together to attack Helck, who slaps them around, with Vermilio as a backup.

The King eventually decides to join the fight and jumps onto Helck. He throws a barrage of killer punches at maximum power, but Helck doesn’t even have a scratch on him. With a single uppercut, the Tothman King is knocked onto the ground.

Helck guarantees he will die if he doesn’t lift the curse on the people of the Kingdom. The King starts writhing in anger and slowly grows bigger, and Vermilio feels an ominous aura increasing within him. The sudden burst of power also takes Helck aback.

Helck is a manga series written and illustrated by Nanaki Nanao. It was serialized online on Shogakukan’s Ura Sunday Website and MangaONE app from May 2014 to December 2017. It has been collected into 12 volumes.

A short spin-off manga titled Piwi: Fushigi na Ikimono was also released in 2018, with its chapters collected in one volume. Another prequel manga series, titled Völundio: Divergent Sword Saga is currently ongoing since its launch in August 2020.
