I Know This Much Is True is a 2020 HBO miniseries co-written and directed by Derek Cianfrance starring Mark Buffalo, Phillip Ettinger, and Katheryn Hahn in important roles.
It is based on Wally Lamb’s 1998 novel by the same name. The HBO miniseries follows the parallel lives of identical twins—Dominick and Thomas Birdsey—in a story exploring themes of betrayal, forgiveness, and treatment of mental illness.
The miniseries features Mark Ruffalo in a double role as the identical twins dealing with mental illness and the turmoil it causes to the family.
Ruffalo’s performance in the double role has been lauded by critics as well as audiences, earning him his second Emmy nomination and his first win for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series.
When asked about his double role at the time, Ruffalo said, “I cannot tell you how much I love this book. It was so deeply moving and personal to me in so many ways.”
The show was greenlit in October 2018, wrapping up its production in 2019, and became a big hit for HBO. However, there were certain difficulties in the filming process.
Residents of Ellenville, New York have now sued Mark Ruffalo and HBO over a 2019 fire at the filming location.
A fire broke out at a local used car dealership in May 2019, where Ruffalo was producing and filming the show, causing the building to burn down.
The fire damaged filming equipment as well as the vehicles and the building. The owners of the dealership have sued the production for damages.
While there were no casualties or serious injuries, residents complained that the “uncovered and unabated debris pile, toxic spill, and wind-driven dust and gaseous dispersion” from the fire has caused long-term damage to their residences, health, and personal lives.
According to local residents, “the film set was a powder keg due to kerosene, heating oil, and other flammable materials being stored at the filming location.”
TMZ reports that the group of residents seeks millions in damages. Residents claim that the damage caused by the fire has still not been cleaned up, even three years after production ended.
Since the lawsuit is fresh, it is unknown how HBO and Ruffalo would handle it. The proceedings of the case may or may not be publicized.
As of now, HBO has released no statement on the matter. Fans of the show might have to wait to see how the case unfolds.
