Will Batgirl cancelation spell trouble for HBO’s Black Canary film?

Birds of Prey spinoff film Black Canary faced a dire dilemma after news revealed that WB Discovery had canceled Batgirl. But now, Jurnee Smollett’s film is in the clear after WB’s confirmation that the film is very much still in the works.

Backtracking a few months, it’s public knowledge that WB and Discovery merged to become Warner Bros. Discovery. This past month, a wide range of cancelations are going around, and new DC projects are being cut before release.

Batgirl, a DC movie planned to be released as an HBO Max original, was in development when it was suddenly scrapped by the studio, writing off the cancelation due to a “redirect of the company strategic vision,” which is shop talk for cutting losses by never releasing a film than taking a risk at the box office.

This disappointing news was followed by fans taking to social media in outrage over Batgirl’s cancelation when Ezra Miller’s Flash will still get his DC film despite his recent illegal behavior.

Fans began to wonder if other female superheroes were going to be out on the backburner like Batgirl. That brought up the question of Black Canary’s film and whether viewers get to see her return in the solo spinoff.

The movie was announced in August 2021 after fans welcomed the character and her badass introduction in the 2020 film Birds of Prey. The DC fandom wanted to see more of Jurnee Smollett’s Black Canary, giving WB the chance to spotlight the African American actress in the role again.

The film has been in development with very few updates apart from Smollett’s confirmed return to the role, and Misha Green (Lovecraft Country) called in as a writer for the HBO Max Original film.

The film’s future was questionable after Batgirl’s cancelation, but TVLine’s report with a spokesperson from WB states that the film is still in the works. No other updates followed the confirmation, but fans can take a breath of relief about Black Canary’s role in the DC film franchise.

Other projects like Blue Beetle are still in jeopardy, but no updates have followed after the confirmation for Black Canary, apart from the green light for the Green Lantern TV show and the cancelation of Strange Adventures.

Fans can expect more news to follow the confirmation. Hopefully, WB will soon release a probable premiere window along with some official images of Jurnee Smollett as Black Canary.
