Chad Stahelski, the director of John Wick: Chapter 4, has revealed his intention to bring back Halle Berry’s character in future entries of the franchise.
Berry portrayed Sofia Al-Azwar, a hotel manager and assassin in Casablanca who assists Keanu Reeves’ titular character with an old marker. However, their alliance was strained as she was implicated in the murder of a High Table member and directed him to the Elder.
Stahelski revealed on The Joe Rogan Experience that the studio and Berry have been in talks about Sofia’s possible comeback to the John Wick franchise.
The director also mentioned that several undisclosed projects related to the John Wick universe are under development but did not specify how Berry’s character could be involved in the future of the franchise. Here is his statement on the topic:
“Yeah. We have actually been in talks several times to try to… I hate the term spinoff. But they are trying to do other satellite projects off the Wick franchise. Hopefully they’ll be good ones.”
Two John Wick spinoffs have been officially announced so far. A film titled Ballerina, featuring Ana de Armas and The Continental, a limited series about Winston’s ascent and the origin of the New York Continental Hotel.
Stahelski also mentioned a secret TV show based on the John Wick universe but did not reveal how many spinoffs are in the pipeline along with the confirmed John Wick 5.
A potential project could feature Berry’s Sofia, either before or after the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, with Reeves reprising his role as John Wick. Berry revealed in 2022 that there were talks for a Sofia-centric film but did not disclose any details about the possible project.
Additionally, franchise producer Erica Lee also expressed her interest in exploring the recurring themes of dogs and their origins, through either Sofia or Shamier Anderson’s Mr. Nobody.
Sofia’s arc and return to the franchise after John Wick: Chapter 4 could be explored in various ways, either in a solo project or other entries. A spinoff film could show her partnering with Mr. Nobody and training him on how to use dogs in combat, which have been crucial in both John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and the acclaimed Chapter 4.
This is one of the many possibilities of a Sofia-related spinoff that could materialize if the upcoming spinoffs perform well in cinemas and on TV.
