James Gunn Discusses The Batman’s Future with DCU’s CEOs

Matt Reeves revealed that he has a meeting planned with the co-CEOs of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, to discuss the future of Batman and the DC Universe.

The franchise plans a spin-off and a sequel to Robert Pattinson’s iteration of the Caped Crusader. Reeves has plans for bringing Colin Farrell to reprise his role as the crime lord in his electrifying version of Gotham City.

These are all part of a much larger plan by Warner Bros. to revitalize the DCEU, so that it can compete with the other giants like the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In a recent interview, Reeves spoke with Yahoo Entertainment about the upcoming 15th anniversary of one of the greatest found footage horror films, Cloverfield. In that discussion, he also talked about the potential future of The Batman franchise.

We’ve talked a few times. I’m supposed to get together with him and Peter sometimes this month. They’ve been working feverishly on what they’re doing, and I’ve been working hard with my partners on what we’re doing — all our shows and stuff. So we’re gonna have a sit-down where we talk about everything that’s going on and what the arcs of these two things are. I’m excited to hear about what they’re doing. It’s just about us really getting to know each other. It’s going to be fun.

The Batman and its potential spin-offs were considered entirely different from canon DCU. There were rumors of Robert Pattinson playing the Dark Knight in future Batman iterations, but Gunn has ended those theories.

News on DCU’s future installments is scarce, but it can be assumed that since the Batman was filmed before the restructuring of the DCU under new leadership, it will likely find its audience.

With meetings between Gunn, Reeves, and Safran so frequent of late, it might happen sooner than we expect. Even though Reeves commented that the sessions are just for them to get to know each other, they are too frequent not to raise suspicions.

It is expected that the audience will be polarized in their opinion on Pattinson entering the DCU. One of the main reasons is that Reeves’ gritty version of Gotham City doesn’t match with DCU’s fantastical world. Therefore, combining the two will make the audience lose the continuity of the two.

On the other hand, a section of the audience is welcoming Pattinson’s entry into the Justice League. He has already shown that he is a worthy Bruce Wayne. His younger version would also complement Clark Kent perfectly.

If batman ever incorporates Gunn’s vision, utilizing Pattinson as a Bruce Wayne’s variant will be the right way to go instead of the DCU’s version of the character. This would be the perfect middle ground, and the audience from both sides will be pleased.

As of now, only Time will tell if The Batman and The DCU will ever cross paths.
