After multiple delays and fans’ demanding a release date, Netflix Korea has finally dropped the premiere date for Gong Yoo and Bae Doo Na starrer series, The Silent Sea.
On November 22, Netflix Korea dropped a Christmas present for K-drama lovers with a otherworldly poster for its sci-fi thriller, The Silent Sea. The brand new poster also announced show’s release date – December 24, 2021.
The Silent Sea announcement poster shows Bae Doona as the astrobiologist Doctor Song Ji-ahn, in a spacesuit standing on the moon. Ji-ahn joins the exploration team to find out the secret behind the abandoned research base, from where they have to bring in mysterious samples.
The Silent Sea is set in 2075 and revolves around mysterious events at an abandoned research station on the moon. A team of explorers is sent on a mission to collect samples, as the resources on Earth dwindle. It’s based on a 2004 movie The Sea of Tranquility, written and directed by Choi Hang-yong, who is also directing the Netflix series.
The streaming giant announced the show’s development in 2019 and confirmed the main lineup by September 2020. For months, the release of the series was delayed with next to no updates.
At a Netflix event in February this year, Bae Doona shared what makes The Silent Sea different from the rest of the sci-fi thrillers.
Other projects may have stories about teams who leave for space because there’s a lack of food and water, but ‘The Silent Sea’ has something that goes beyond that.
Bae Doona
Netflix’s heavy investment in K-drama is proving to be a huge gainer in recent months. With Squid Game and Hellbound proving to be some of Netflix’s biggest shows taking this year, expectations from The Silent Sea are understandably running high.
The key point of attraction for The Silent Sea has to be its star-studded ensemble, including Gong Yoo, Bae Doona, Lee Joon and Heo Sang-tae.
Hallyu King Gong Yoo (Boys over Flowers, Goblin,Coffee Prince) plays the exploration team’s leader, Han Yoon-jae. He leads his team on the difficult 24-hour mission. Bae Doona (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, The Host, Kingdom) also joins the cast alongside former idol Lee Joon and Heo Sang-tae (Squid Game, The Age of Shadows).
About The Silent Sea
The Silent Sea is an upcoming South Korean sci-fi mystery thriller series based on the 2004 short film titled The Sea of Tranquility. The short movie was written and directed by Choi Hang-yong, who is also directing the series for Netflix.
The drama includes a star-studded cast of veteran actors Gong Yoo, Bae Doona nad Heo Sang-tae along with Lee Joon.
Set in a dystopian Earth in 2075 where food and water are scarce, a team of space explorers are tasked with a mission to bring in samples from an abandoned research station on the moon. The 24-hour mission includes Han Yoon-jae the exploration team’s captain, Doctor Song Ji-an, an astrobiologist and Captain Ryoo Tae-seok, a head engineer.
The Silent Sea will premiere on Netflix on December 24, 2021.
