Episode 5 Recap
Lieutenant Tsurumi writes to Sugimoto’s group to say that he would visit Karafuto after stopping at Noboribetsu. He, therefore, requests that everyone remain in Oodomari for the upcoming two weeks. The gang decides to wait in Toyohara instead because it has bigger inns and is larger than Oodomari.
Later that day, two men with a camera meet up with Sugimoto and Asirpa in the forest after they are impressed with how she makes a fire. Wolverines attack the group before they can identify themselves.
Sugimoto and Asirpa defeat them. The man then identifies himself as a filmmaker who has been documenting the Karafuto Ainu way of life for some time.
Asirpa sees this as an opportunity to graph Ainu folktales passed down orally through the years visually. They make a few films, with Asirpa as the director. The actors are the only viewers when they are later screened in the movie theatre.
A few years ago, the filmmaker encountered Asirpa and captured part of her early life with her parents. He shows the film to them.
Asirpa finally sees her mother for the first time in the film, making her emotional. She sees herself as an infant with her parents. A fire breaks out in the hall, ending up burning the reel.
They exit the theatre quickly. Sugimoto decides to see Asirpa since he is worried about her. She calls the movie a brilliant innovation when the two first start chatting, but she counters that it cannot save the Ainu people’s ways of life by itself. She must choose whether or not to take charge of the Ainu.

Golden Kamuy is based on a manga series written and illustrated by Satoru Noda. It was serialized in August 2014 in the seinen magazine Weekly Young Jump. The manga concluded in April 2022 and has been collected into 31 volumes.
