Episode 3 Recap
At one of Noboribetsu’s well-known waterfalls, Nikaido and Usami are taking a hot bath when the warrant officer, Kikuta, approaches them. The two discover the peculiar incident that happened to Private Rikimatsu Ariko, who traveled farther into the highlands to secret hot springs that only the Ainu know of.
It turned out that Ariko had seen a strange man dressed in a snow geta and strangely patterned clothing. When Ariko inquires about the peculiar design, an elderly Ainu woman responds that they are tattoos. Kikuta locates the remote hot spring and captures the man that Ariko had presumably seen.
The man is revealed to be Anji Toni and part of Hijikita’s crew. Toni has devised a strategy to deal with his adversaries once and for all. Toni tries to shoot Kikuta as soon as he sees him, not realizing that the warrant officer has also brought a gun.
A shootout ensues. Toni’s troops are quickly defeated, but he escapes. Ariko decides to track down the inmate with the tattoos and kill him. Ariko, in the meantime, asks Kikuta to remain behind and tend to Usami, who was shot in the leg.
Ariko is the only Ainu who can genuinely understand the snow-covered valleys because he was one of the Ainu who was taken back from Hakkoda during a climbing disaster. When he has finally trapped Toni in the desired position, he fires at various spots close to him, triggering an avalanche.
A few days later, Kikuta eventually locates Ariko, who has kept his whereabouts a secret from his fellow soldiers. Ariko presents the warrant officer with Toni’s skin with tattoos as a gift. He argues that Toni was buried in the snow, so it was impossible to carry his body back. Toni is supposedly dead.
Asirpa, Sugimoto, and the rest are together having fermented rice balls. Koito asks Tsukishima what ‘Barchonak’ means in Russian, to which he replies, ‘Spoiled Rich Kid.’

Golden Kamuy is based on a manga series written and illustrated by Satoru Noda. It was serialized in August 2014 in the seinen magazine Weekly Young Jump. The manga concluded in April 2022 and has been collected into 31 volumes.
