Ghibli Director Hayao Miyazaki Gets Bored of Retirement; Returns Again

Studio Ghibli fans and followers of anime all over the world will be overjoyed to know that Hayao Miyazaki has come out of retirement once again! According to his son Goro, Miyazaki was returning to directing because he got bored of his aimless lifestyle during retirement. In a promotional interview for his own Ghibli production, Earwig and the Witch, Goro said Miyazaki had to come back “in order to live, basically.”

Miyazaki founded Studio Ghibli in 1985 with his friend and collaborator Isao Takahata. Since then, Ghibli has produced some of the highest-grossing, critically acclaimed, and truly magical anime movies of all time. The studio has become a benchmark for animation and inspiring stories—similar to Disney in America.

Miyazaki himself was responsible for producing My Neighbor Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away, the latter of which received an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film.

The director has announced his retirement before—six times, to be precise—but has returned each time to work on different projects. His last credit as a director and a screenwriter was in 2013’s The Wind Rises. Since 2015, he has been working in his retirement on an animation short called Boro the Caterpillar, which he suggested could be made into a full-length feature film.

As reported by the Japanese newspaper Kyodo, and confirmed by Toshio Suzuki, he is currently working on a full-length feature film in Tokyo.

While Suzuki did not provide a name, it is most likely that Miyazaki is busy producing How Do You Live?—a film inspired by his retired life. However, a release date is not in sight since the film will go back to the familiar but quite lengthy hand-drawn animation style.

Whatever it may be, we are just stoked to know that a Miyazaki film is on the horizon!
